SECTION TWO ' ' iii By WILBORNE HARRELL Me and Houdini! Ever since boyhod mdgic has had a lasting fascination for me. But I never became very adept, and can in nowise class myself a proses-l sional magician.' With me it remains a hobby—pure and sim ple. Magic is show business, it requires stagecraft and show manship as well as skill in per forming the tricks. And a per son must have a little “ham”, in his mftkeup to successfully perform magic in a smooth and professional manner. I have very little of these necessary ingredients that a stage ma- 1 gician must have. But that does; not deter me from dabbling in magic; I like it, and get a kick: out of even performing before; a mirror with myself for an' audience. Recently I have per formed for several groups of Boy Scouts—or rather, instead of performing, I just “did” my Negro Home Demonstration News By MBS. ONKIK S. CHABLTON, County Negro Home Economics Agent Dr. Andrew A. Best l of Green ville, N. C., was really at his' best as he spoke at the Awards Program Tuesday in connection! with the Community Develop-1 ment program in Chowan Coun- | ty. His message on “Progress For Our Times” stressed the ad- 1 vantages of community develop-! ment and what each individual! and family must put into it, if we are to improve and be suc-i cessful. ' In complimenting the com-j munities on work accomplished, in 1961, Dr. Best pointed out that success today is used as a stimulus to press on to future J achievements. He warned' against complacency and defeat-; ism and challenged each to #learn what is right, then have| courage to do what is right. | Seven communities worked on Community Development in 1961. FURTHER NOTE OF MAGIC— i Casey Hugh Dobson of States-' ! ville, North Carolina, is totally blind, but he performs feats of magic with the smooth skill of a professional magician. That i should be a lesson to those of us with two good eyes who as-! pire to the role of magician. l Dobson adapts his tricks to his own individual style, taking into 'consideration the limitations of ; 'his handicap. The key to a happy, success ful family rest with careful family planning and manage ment. This should be done far enough ahead to avoid the last minute rush, so that the family can enjoy and emphasize the spiritual values that Christian families believe and live by. Our traditions may include the’ tree, Santa Claus, gifts, cards, Christmas devotionals, splitting the atom. But that would require too great a sacri ; fice to the great god progress. If modern man ever adopts a coat-of-arms, it will contain I these words: Bigger, Better, More. The trend of everything is up, up, up. The government wants more and more of your money in taxes; spiraling prices take more of what is left. If a fellow owns a car, he wants a better one. No matter what he has, he wants a bigger, or a better one, or more. Man is never satisfied. Even in the matter of death and destruction, he wants- more. Bigger atom bombs, better atom bombs, and more of ’em. . If we ever do travel down the road to total annihilation, we won’t be pikers, we’ll all die on a grand scale. | No compromise with communism! and a big family dinner, among other things. The entire family should share in the planning and activities connected with each, ■so that all may enjoy an un j hurried Merry Christmas. Civil Defense Plans Key To Survival Continued from Page 1, Section 1 cities completely destroyed; long lines of weary, homeless, dis placed people with their only possessions on their back. The sick, the hungry, wandering from place to place not know ing what tomorrow would bring. Can you spare a few hours a week to help guard against.this kind of thing? I am sure that you could if you thought that some day your family and loved ones would be in the procession of the homeless. When I read today’s newpapers I can’t help wonder how soon. We have* had much more warning than we did in World War 11. You see pic tures of young men leaving for active duty; headlines about American troops facing Com munist troops in Berlin at the wall and news headlines and pictures from many places where Communism is trying to ( spread. One thing for sure, the Communist plan is dedicated to overthrow democracy as we have it and to world domina-| tion and slavery. We must! draw the line somewhere and i when we draw the line we must be able to stand pat. To doj this we must be able to sur-, vive. Our ability to recover is very important in the overall defense planning of our country. We must display a staving pow er and endurance beyond that' ever before required from the i people of this nation; if we do th:s, along with our military de fense and retaliatory forces we will then have a strong deter rent to war. The Communists will think a long time before they attack if we have the abili ty to survive the attack and come back fighting. | We know that Russia has an extensive civil defense system. The Russians have established units for the protection of every factory, collective farm, school and university. Millions of its population are being instructed in the principles of civil de fense. We are dragging our feet. We’re waiting for good old Uncle to tuck us safely in bed. We’re waiting for someone else to make the move. There is one thing we must face up to:, There are a lot of things we must do ourselves; we must learn what can be done by each and every one of us; we must take time to find out what sur vival is all about. Any i able plan you make will increase ; I your chances of survival. Let’s 1 throw out the defeatist attitude j i and stop thinking why we shouldn’t. Let’s get together with our family and our friends —talk it over. If I can help in! plans call me, phone 31111 “or visit the office at the Hotel Joseph Hewes in Edenton. Sur-; vival planning is your insurance against disaster.
