Hollowell, in the Cross Roads Community, to construct three grass waterways on one of his fields last week. These water ways were planned in Mr. Hol iowell’s basic conservation farm plan in 1959. Before the water ways «o»ild he constructed an open ditch had to be construct ed as an outlet. After the spoil for the open ditch was spread last week the waterways were shaped with the bulldozer that was spreading the spoil. The waterways were then disked, limed, fertilized and seeded to fescue. Surface inlets to drop the water safely into the outlet ditch were installed where each waterway entered the outlet ditch. A ten foot strip of fes cue was seeded along side the cutlet ditch to prevent erosion cf the side slopes of the ditch. Hairy Indigo Hairy indigo was tried as a summer cover crop by four farmers in Chowan County last year. This legume appears to do N. J. Hairy indigo is an an nual, root knot, nematode re sistant legiime which is non toxic to animals. It can be seeded at 10 lbs. per acre for approximately $3.00. Farmers who seeded hairy in digo last summer were Paul Ober, Luther Bunch, H. F. Bv rum and B. F. Bateman. Pollock Swamp Watershed The design survey that is be ing made on Pollock Swamp will be completed in the next few days. Location stakes for the channel were set in the cen terline of all of the proposed channels. Elevations and other neces sary information will be obtain ed.
