How did Life magazine find
out about Jimbo’s Jumbos. The
people at J. J. got a long dis
tance call from New York.
Through a bad connection, ques
tions were asked, answers giv
en. No identification as to the
caller . . .'.but several weeks
later, Life had a few items about i
Jimbo’s Jumbos.
Speaking of magazines, pub
lishers of those periodicals have
really had to struggle to keep
alive. So-called men’s magazines
have been doing fairly well, al
though new mags come and go
so quickly. Life and the Sat
urday Evening Post have chang
ed their formats, both for the
better. The Host has become
more controversial and Life has
taken on the aspects of adult
presentations, at times, resem
bling Playboy in its content. So
far as Life magqzine is con
cerned, though, their change has
been most effective, text and
pictures more exciting and in
teresting.
The young lady who sings the
current number one song, ‘‘Lo
co-Motion,” is little Eva. She
hails from Belhaven. More on
her in a latter column. Kind
of an interesting story.
Closing Thought: People who
are always taking care of their
health are like misers, who are
hoarding up a treasure which
they have never spirit enough to
enjoy.

At Fort Jackson
Continued from Page 1, Section 1
will be introduced to a wide
variety of infantry, skills, along
with intensive physical condi
tioning. He will attend classes
in the traditions of the service,
character guidance and the role
of tlu Army in the world to
day. Many of his instructors
are combat veterans of World
War II and the Korean conflict.
During his seventh week of
training, he lives in the field
under conditions similar to a
combat zone. Here, moving over
rough terrain, he has a chance
to’ participate in realistic com
bat situations and to apply his
newly acquired skills.
Basic training is climaxed by
a graduation review before the
commanding general of Fort
Jackson. Outstanding perform
ances are recognized in a cere
mony that is open to parents and
invited guests.

pimento cheese sandwich, pork
and beans, cole slaw, rolls and
butter, peaches.
Tuesday —\k pint milk, spiced
ham, potato salad, green black
eye peas, beet pickles, pineapple
and grapefruit cup, rolls and
butter.
Wednesday—% pint milk, rav
;oli. tossed salad, string beans,
block cake chocolate icing, rolls
and butter.

en salad, buttered corn. May
peas, lettuce and tomato, rolls
and crackers, jello with fruit. •

Board Os Education
August 6,1962
The Chowan County Board of
Education held its regular meet
ing August 6,1962, at S.:00 P. M.
I The following members were
present: G. B. Potter, Garland
Asbell, John M. Elliott, Eugene
Jordan, Marvin Evans and O. C-
Long, Jr.
The meeting was called to or
der by the chairman, Mr. Potter,
by having the minutes of the
previous meeting read.- The
minutes as read w.ere adopted
by a motion made by Mr. Long
and seconded <cy Mr. Asbell.
The reports of the Local School
Fund Treasurer were presented
for Chowan and White Oak
Schools for July. The reports
were adopted by a motion made
by Mr. Jordan, seconded by Mr.
Evans.
The bills paid since the last
meeting were read, after which
Mr. Evans moved that same be
approved. Mr. Elliott seconded
the 'motion, and the same was
approved.
The contract offered by the
Pilot Life Insurance Company
and the Walker Agency wrere
given consideration. A motion
was made by Mr. Long that the
Pilot Life Insurance Company's
scholastic contract for $1.75 per
student be accepted. Motion
was seconded by Mr. Evans and
duly adopted.
Consideration was given to
two agencies to supply milk to
the schools. A motion was made
by Mr. Jordan that the schools
should purchase milk from the
Maola Milk and Ic Cream Com
pany, rather than from the Seal
test Company. Mr. Elliott sec
onded the motion, and the mo
tion was duly adopted.
The election of Mrs. Mary M
Smoak by the District School
Committee, to teach in the Cho
wan High School grades was ap
proved by a motion made by Mr.
Asbell, seconded by Mr. Jordan
and duly passed.
The superintendent reported
that the audit of the school ac
counts had been made by Max
G. Warren, certified public ac
countant, Raleigh, N. C., but the
reports had not been filed.
Motion to adjourn was made
by Mr. Evans, seconded by Mr
Long and the Board stood ad
journed.
