Why? Because he, like many other men with families! of their own, is not financially 1 able to support his mother. This man, an only child, took care of his widowed mother I from the time he was first able to get a job after be finished school. He married and had I children and continued to sup- j port his mother. However,! when the mother had a long ill ness and required expensive medical care and hospitalization, he had much difficulty in pay- ; jng these bills and those of a growing family of children. At 1 the same time he was making payments on a modest home and j the eldest child was ready for : college. He mortgaged the home, but the situation became increasingly worse, and as a re sult both he and his wife were in a constant state of anxiety. At last he visited his county department of public welfare and explained the situation. Un der law, the mother was found to he eligible to receive old age assistance. She was placed in a board home and the couple, relieved of the financial and emotional strain which they had suffered for years, are able to accept and deal with their fi nancial situation more capably. Another case history is that j of an elderly woipan who work ed all her life as a saleslady. When poor health and advancing years forced her to quit work she had no means of support except a Social Security insur ant e payment of £6O a month, j She had never married and had no relatives to contribute to her | support. The Social Security payment was insufficient to take care of her minimum needs for living and medical bills. She lived alone in a small ; apartment and was able to take care of her physical needs. Eligibility for old age assist ance has made it possible for this elderly woman to have es sential food, clothing, shelter, and medical attention when needed. Many persons have outlived their savings or were unable to save enough during their work ing years, after paying their bills and their taxes, to provide for their old 3ge. Others have no families to contribute to their support. Some become ill and use up their savings for medical treatment, or have other mis fortunes that result in the need When you call Long Distance Station-to-Station difference is the . money you mm* iOaSeSt i W : rfTl _ V -Hr O, jaagy I via nliirlfllK fy, vorOlllla gT. I Today we endeavor to show the need for fearless preaching and for sincere repentance as (preparation tor the coming of the kingdom of God. This lesson on John the Bap-' list is planned as a bridge be tween teachings from the Old Testament and those of the iNew Testament. John stood in a direct line of descent from the Old Testament prophets as far as his teaching was concerned. 1 'Like them, he talked of the Kingdom that is to come; andj! for him, too, righteousness is its ; i lessential characteristic. And when Jesus began his public ministry he used John’s text to introduce 1 ! it. Thus John may well be con sidered a link between the Old Testament prophets and Jesus. John reminds us of the Old Testament prophets on another point also; his fearless condem nation of the wrongdoing of his hearers. John, however, was not misled by the size of the crowd. He could tell from their com placent listening that • they were not paying any attention to his call to repentance. 'They were hearing, rather, that which they wanted to hear. They, alas, have their duplicates in compla cent congregations today, who prefer to listen only to com forting, consoling messages cf religion. John startled them out of their complacency with his force ful preachments and his chal lenging tone. Would it not be of value to us to have a John in our midst today?
