Kxteaaioa Afeat, A THANKSGIVING prayer Ol most loving and generous Fattier, we come with special giatjtude in our hearts today. Aware as. we are that every day ought to be a Thanksgiving day tot each of us, we ask Thy forgiveness for the times when we have faded to be truly ap , preciative of the kindnesses, tender care, correction, food, shelter and life itself that Thou hast given us. We thank Thee for the abund ant harvest in this land, pray ing that we may ever be as mindful as our Pilgrim Fathers Were, of our indebtedness to Thee. **e thank Thee for all work envisioned or accomplished that has as its aim the strengthen ing of the ties of peace, broth erhood, and good will among nations, groups and individuals. We thank Thee for all Chris tian churches at home and in foreign countries, not forgetting j to be grateful for our own house of worship to which we are bound by the closest ties of fel lowship, loyalty, understanding and love. We thank Thee for our fam ilies and friends, and for the many people everywhere who are earnestly helping to make this world a better place by their example and by making their religion away of help to others. We thank Thee chiefly for Thy beloved Son, and for the high privilege of being His sin cere followers. In His name who taught us how to translate ■our words into faithful services to Thee. Amen. Plentiful Foods For December Beef, pork, turkeys, pecans, peanuts, apples and cran berries. That’s the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s yst of plentiful foods for December. The sea-; tured items are beef and pecans. The department expects 15 per cent more beef to go to market this December than last. Not only will there be more cattle available but they’ll weigh more. For consumers, this means lots of good beef at at tractive retail prices. Pecans, the other featured item, are also having a big year—the biggest eves-. The crop is forecast at a record 297 .million pounds, four times larg er than in 1962. You’ll find plenty of pecans on grocery shelves —both shelled and in the shell. So put an extra portion of pecans in your holiday nut bowl and add them generously to Christmas cookies, salads, cake icings. December pork marketings also will be larger than last year. Turkey marketings prob ably will be down slightly from a year ago and prices may be a little higher, but turkeys will still be one of your best holi day buys. On the basis of the average quantity of peanuts harvested for nuts during the preceding years the national marketing quota would be 737,000 tons which would result in a national acre age allotment of 1,278,680 acres. The national marketing quota jhas, therefore, been established at 1,066,625 tons, which would be produced with a “normal” ■yield of 1,325 pounds per acre on the minimum national acre age allotment of 1,610,000 acres. The national peanut acreage allotment, less one-tenth of one percent reserved for new'farms, is apportioned to states, and the state allotments are apportioned among individual peanut-produc ing farms within each state, in accordance with provisions of the governing legislation. North Carolina has an allotment of 168,667 acres for 1964 as com pared to 168,777 for 1963. Peanut marketing quotas have been in effect each year since 1949. The last referendum was held in December 1962, when a record 96.9 percent of the grow ers voting approved marketing quotas for the 1963, 1964, and 1965 crops.
