LANIER, Pa*or let’s go to Church luudain Sunday School Lesson BORN TO MAKE MEN FREE International Sunday School Lesson for December 22, 1963. Memory Selection: “When the time had fully come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, so that we might receive adop tion as sons.” (Galatians 4:4-5) The cause of freedom its seeking, its defending has been the goal of mankind ever since the world began. Down through the ages men have struggled for freedom of one kind or another . . . the right to think; the right to speak free ly what is in one’s mind and heart; the right to believe; and for this great goal martyrs have been made, and man’s blood has meen spilt, just as the blood of Jesus Christ was shed to bring about the greatest freedom of all the freedom of mankind from sin and his glorious re demption in God. Today we study the ever beautiful story of Christmas. Down through the ages it has stayed unchanged; the same story is told over and over again, but the listener never tires of hearing it. The miracle of Christmas is that God came to dwell among mankind not as an omnipo tent Being, but as a tiny human, going through all the motions of human beings, from infancy to manhood. This God-like child, despite his great destiny that was yet to unfold in the great est drama the world has ever known, lived the life of a normal child of his times and of the faith into which he had been born. He observed the ritual requirements of Jewish law. He went to the Temple at the hour of prayer. The law under which devout Jewish families lived had served them well, and Jesus Colonial Motor Co. of Edenton BUICK - OLDS - FONTIAC CMC TRUCKS Belk - Tyler’s RDF.N TON’S SHOPPING CENTER W. E. But Christ would, in the end, do for men what law could not do. Laws fulfilled their purpose by con victing man for his sons, and making him aware of them. The law condemned . . . but Christ came to save. The Jews, and Paul, before his conversion, believed that ac ceptance by God depended upon full and explicit obedience to the Mosiac law. After his conver sion, Paul realized the narrow confines of his beliefs, and he preached “redemption” with the same zeal that he had lavished on his previous convictions, be fore he saw the Light. He said, in effect, that men, through their slavery to sin and the law, had orphaned themselves; but now, in the birth of Christ, as related in the Christmas story, God had sent his Son to depossess them as his children; and as his sons, they would also become his heirs. But with inheritance comes ste wardship. With every privilege comes certain responsibility. In Christ there is a freedom which no man can take away. The sons of God must of neces sity feel impelled to share the true meaning of Christ’s birth with their fellow-men. Just how great is the need for this sharing of our Christian be liefs is self-evident when we consider the stress and strain of this modern civilization in which we live. The world, through and because of the awe-inspiring achievements of the questing minds of men in the realms of science and machinery, has of necessity become smaller. Time and distance have been com pressed to the nth degree. This has brought about a sense of brotherhood among the respon sible nationsof the world.
