PAGE TWO uJKflbft out Hairy Indigo New Summer Crop In Chowan j : lift* -<fe»3 — v.,— David Lee Hollowell is shown above observing a young stand of hairy indigo that he tried last year as a new summer cov er crop. Hairy indigo is a relatively new summer cover crop for Chowan County. It is a summer annual legume adapted to any of the well-drained soils in the county. Milton Evans, David Lee Hollo well, Fred Castelloe, Thomas Rogerson, J. B. Hollowell, Roger Spivey and Paul Ober are a few Chowan farmers that have tried hairy indigo. They all seem well pleased with its results. The seed are non-toxic and it is not a host plant for the diseases and nematodes that attack our crops today. The common variety does not reseed in North Carolina; therefore it cannot become a pest in other crops. It can be seeded in almost any crop before the last cultiva tion. Paul Ober sowed indigo in his watermelons before the last cultivation last year and said that the watermelons were harvested before the indigo got in the way. The plants start off growing slow at first and the weeds may look bad, but after a few weeks the indigo will take over. It grows from three to seven feet tall depending on the land and season. The seed should be broadcast at the rate of 8-10 lbs. per acre up until and into June. Seed are available from local seed dealers this year. Hairy in digo is an eligible summer cover crop under the 1964 ACP pro gram at the rate o£ $2.00 per 1 acre.
