Silage-Fed And Homegrown Heifers
Are Most Economical Replacements

contained in the results of a re
cent research study at North
Carolina State. The project com-1
pared the two systems of herd I
replacement, and it also made a'
comparison of different feeding
programs for replacements.
How to replenish milking
herds wasn’t much of a problem
for North Carolina dairymen a
few years ago. But the need for
specialization has been felt here,
too.
Some dairymen in the state
have felt they could operate
more economically by using
(their labor, equipment and ’ feed
with mature animals, while buy
ing replacements for these ani
mals from other farms.
‘‘The comparison shows that
raising your own replacements is
usually the most profitable sys
tem,” explains D. g. Hargood,
farm management specialist at
N. C. State.
“In the study it was assumed
that heifers ready to calve
could be purchased at prices* of
$450. The comparisons showed
that it was always cheaper to
raise heifers where the milking
herd size was constant. -
"Only when the herd size was
being expanded was it more pro
fitable to purchase heifers and
use the released. labor 6b the
milking herd”, Harwood added.
■ The researchers figured jhe es
timated cost of raising heifers
weighing 1,159 pounds at 27
months of age with 14 feeding
systems.
The least cost system Whs de
termined to be 25 pounds of
milk replacer, 293 pounds oil oalf
starter, 1,327 pounds of grain ‘
and 13% tons of silage. Esti
mated feed cost was $144.
The most expensive system <
was found to be a combination
of 40 pounds of milk teplacer,
i 467 pounds of calf starter, 1,156 0
rpolmds of grain and seven tons
of hay. This ration would cost
a total of S3OB by the time the
heifer was 27 months old.
“It is interesting”, said Har- ,
wood, “since many North Caro
lina dairymen feed hay to heifers
and graze them the first six t
months, that a system including 1
feeding of silage on drylat with: !
