BROAIESTREET BULLETIN
There’s a definite hint of fall
in the air —just enough of a
hint to make us realize that the
wonderful hot, lazy summer
days are numbered. For those
of us who love the outdoors,
the coming o £ cool and# dold
weather is sort of like a cloud
hanging over. However, with a
zest for living, we’ll find, as
■usual, many interesting things
to do, such as fishing (Septem
ber being one of the best fish
ing months), football games and
planting our fall garden. Al
though it’s August, there aTe
many vegetables that can be
planted here in the South. Two
of these are radishes and lettuce,
which come up quickly and are
usable within a few weeks sif
ter sowing. If by chance that
frost should threaten, here is a
good way to form your own
miniature greenhouse. Cut coat
hangers and farm them into
U’s. Stick the ends into the
soil like croquet wickets, spac
ing the U’s 18 inches apart.
Use discarded plastic bags from
dry cleaned garments to stretch
over these U frames, thus form
ing protection for these small
vegetables. *
While thinking on the subject
of gardens, flower beds, etc., it
reminds me that now is the
time to start that compost pile,
which will furnish your garden
next spring with the organic
matter needed. If started early
enough, it can furnish you with
she foundation needed for pot
ting soil guaranteed to grow
super plants. Use the inedible
parts of the vegetables you and
your family eat every day* or
the dead flowers taken from the
vases. A pit oan be dug for the
compost pile or it can be thrown
in an out of the way place in
your yard. (Note: Fishing
worms will thrive under the
compost heap, also).
We had a highly successful
fishing trip at Nags Head last
Saturday—in the morning. We
got there early, not too many
people fishing and the spots
were biting like mad. When
fishing on the piers, you have
the experience of meeting many
kinds of people, from every
where. There’s just a common
denominator there, the love of
Wishing. Then, too, most of them
/►.ill help another fisherman out,
if the fish on the line is too big
or messy (like a skate) or if
lines get tangled, they even con
trol their tempers and help un
tangle them. Meanwhile there’s
many a whopper of a fish story
told aDout the fish they almost
landed. I notice that more and
more women are fishing it’s
good for the nerves.
I read in the Baltimore fash
ion news that the bouffant look
of yesteryear is out for fall and
the “small head” is in. This is
the season to let the “natural
head” shape show. Some hair
stylists call for bangs and other
differ with the hair definitely
combed off the face. Either
way, it will be a relief to see
something other than the bee
hive.
I also read that London’s in
formation center is busy passing
out names of ear-piercers. New
interest in piercing the ears
is the wearing of heirloom jew
elry. The wearer of the real
crown jewels, Queen Elizabeth is

1 Did You Know That—
Hot vinegar is good to re
move paint from window panes
much quicker than razor blades.
Serve cheese appetizers on
pretzel sticks rather than tooth
picks and the sticks can be eat
en, too.
When using lemon juice for
rust stains, hold the spotted area
over the spout of a steaming tea
kettle and the spots will disap
pear like magic.
In order to place a mouse
trap in an out of the way or
tight place, attach the trap to
the end of a yard stick and your
problem will be solved.
