President The Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel Commission has an nounced immediate toll rate changes effective January 1, giv ing lower rates to trucks with five axles, from $16.00 to $13.00 it is reported by Alton Elmore, president of the Edenton Cham ber of Commerce. Rates on four axle trucks go down from $13.00 to $12.00. Recommendations to reduce rates followed a study called for [in the bond trust identure that I governs operation of the 17,6- mile crossing between the Vir ginia mainland and the Deimar-I [va Peninsula. “The changes correct some in equities in the toll structure,” according to Elmore. “The low er rates should result in increas ed vehicular traffic over this fa-! | cility, to and through Edenton,”! he pointed out. “Station wagons] and carry-alls registered as com- j mercial vehicles and previously charged $5.00, now will be classi-l fied as passenger vehicles and j charged the basic rate of $4.00 for car and driver. As of January 1, they will pay their base vehicle rate of $4.00 or $5.00„ plus SI.OO for a single axle trailer or $2.00 for a two axle trailer.” Elmore noted that truck op erators like to use the coastal route served by the Bridge-Tun nel because, it enables them to avoid hills, traffic congestion and freezing weather conditions. It offers a distance saving of some 55 miles on truck runs between eastern Virginia-North Carolina and Philadelphia-New York-New England, and on all runs a time saving of two hours over the old ferry crossing.
