W. Pat rick. Work was completed in five counties: Chowan, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell ana W ashington. In Chowan County: 0.2 mile of grade and paving was placed on SR 1109 (DARF Plant Road). In Hyde County: 1.8 miles of grade -md stabilize was placed on SR 1125 (Maple town Road). 0.25 mile of grade and stabilize was plac ed on Hyde County School driyei In Tyrrell County: 3.0 miles of finish base and paving was placed on SR 1307 (Frying Pan Road). Chowan County joined the nation in the shock when 1 news was broadcost that Will Rogers and Wiley Post . were killed in an airplane crash in Alaska. Town Council announced that the tax rate for 1936 would be $1.15 compared with $1.26 the previous year. The Board of Health lift ed restrictions against child ren under 15 years of age to congregate. The action was taken uue to a marked decrease of infantile paraly sis cases throughout the state. Considerable time was spent in the Court House when three Chowan County watermelon growers were hailed before representatives of the AAA for alleged vio lation of the watermelon marketing agrt I nent. The three growers were L. A. Bunch, W. G. Forehand and R. N. Privott. Funeral services were held for Nellie Horne, who met a horrible death when, as she i was at work at the Edenton Cotton Mill, her husband, John Horne, virtually cut off her head with a razor. Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Leary were in Seattle, Wash., on a motor trip across the continent. While there the bodies of Will Rogers and W T iley Post arrived from Alasxa. A valuable silver vase was stolen from the Edenton Methodist Church and ef forts failed to recover the vase. Asa Griffin entertained members of the Red Men degree team at one of his tobacco barns in the Cow pen Neck section. Mrs. Z. W. Evans gave a lovely dinner party in honor of her husband’s 74th birth day. Town Council offered a site 110x110 feet on the fair grounds to the State of North Carolina for use in construction of an armory. A two-weeks-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sutten field died at the home of his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Webb, in the Yeopim section. 20 TEARS AGO Dr. Walter A. Leggett, senior member of Leggett & Davis Drug Store, retired from business and sold his interest in the concern to J. W. Davis, who continued to operate under the same name. Cpl. Noah Goodwin, Jr., was awarded the Purple Heart for .injuries sustained in battle during fighting in the European Theater of Operations. Capt. Harry L.
