If you want to read an entertaining book, get the best seller, “Up the Down Staircase” by Bel Kaufman. It’s a wise and witty book, somewhat poignant. Anyone having ever taught school, in fact, most of us who ever went to school, will recognize many incidents told by the author. And it’s nice to know that our Miss Robert son of the local library can get these “best sellers.” It’s cooler now and time to think about winter time cooking, which may be more fattening than summertime food, but the change is good and food delicious. I’m thinking right now about turnips cooked with either pork or beef and a few po tatoes, or that ever delicious sauerkraut with pork and mashed potatoes. And hot rolls, apple dumplings and pumpkin pies. Some people seem to live to eat and I suppose I’m one of them. It’s wonderful that we have many interested par ents in our community who are interested in the young people and seem to under stand and “get along well” with them. This past week end a group of young people from the MYF (Methodist Youth Fellowship), under the direction of Rev. E. C. Shoaf and chaperoned by Mrs. Howard Ange, spent their fall retreat at the Jesse Harrell cottage at Nags Head. Preparations and plans were made for their fall and winter programs. The MYF counselor and several members of the MYF from the Kitty Hawk Metho dist Church joined the local group Sunday afternoon to help with and to receive ideas for their own group. It was beautiful weather at the beach this weekend and although the group accom plished quite a lot of work they took time out for rec reation and enjoyed dinner at the Carolinian Hotel. These are times which these young people will long re member and will no doubt be largely responsible in character building. Members of the local Ma sonic Lodge took their wives out to dinner Thurs day night in grand style. The ladies of the Rocky Hock community cooked and served the meal, which in it self tells the tale of delici ous food. It’s so hard to re member your weight when confronted with country ham, com, lima beans, sweet po tatoes, salad, hot rolls, home made cake and coffee. And what a wonderful blessing to be healthy enough to en joy these things! Here’s a quickie dessert: Topsy-Turvy Rolls—Combine one can applesauce, 1 table spoon grated orange rind, 2 tablespoons orange juice, Vi cup each butter and brown sugar. Heat and spread "in buttered baking pan. Press 12 brown and serve rolls firmly into fruit mixture Bake 15 minutes in 450 de gree oven. Serve warm. - BABY BEEF SALE - ground ’ r-BONE- SIRLOIN CHOICE A wfliCTnifti AQC BEEF Ik 39c uILhIhJ Uw Sliced Bacon - 59< RIBSTEAKS Il>. 69c ROHM) STEAKS Il>, 79c ArCM J LEAN CUT LOIN RUN USDA INSPECTED Will I IN CHATHAM PURE I ARMOUR’S STAR P&Q .
