Everett, operator of the Edenton - Mackers Ferry, reported that the line had re sumed operations after eight days of idleness due to ice on the Sound. Mike Kehayes announced that he had ju6t completed a dining and dance hall over the Edenton Case. Argument of the appeal of John Horne, local convicted wife slayer in State Prison under sentence of death, was made before the Supreme Court at Raleigh. W. D. Pruden, court designated counsel, presented the appeal for Horne. Edenton High School’s box ing team easily won a vic tory, 7-2, over Windsor High School before a large crowd of fans in Windsor. Possib ly the best drawing card was the fight between Vernon Spruill, state heavyweight champion and Alston. Cason an nounced the engagement of her daughter, Miss Alice Makely Cason, to James Har old Lineberger of Belmont, N. C. 20 YEARS AGO Veterans in Chowan Coun ty received $10,274.80 in re adjustment allowance pay ments during 1945, according to a report issued by the Unemployment Compensation Commission. This amount was paid to job-hunting vet erans covering 576 weeks they were without 'employ ment during the year. J. Clarence Leary, Marvin Wilson, J. H. Conger and R. C. The group pointed out tnat roads in the county were reported to be in very bad condition, so that the Commissioners adopted the road paving pro gram. This included (1) paving from Bolton’s Bridge through Cowpen Neck to the Henry White - Miller farm, then by Chambers Ferry to Clarence Harrell’s store, back to the Macedonia Baptist Church, continuing -on to Valhalla; (2) paving the Bally Oak road to Drum mond’s Point; (3) paving the i road off No. 32 at Carroll 1 Byrum’s corner to Elbert Peele’s store, up to Hender son Nixon’s home, back to Mark Bunch's farm and then on to Henry Bunch's store at Rocky Hock near the Baptist Church; (4) paving the road starting in North Edenton going through Paradise to Green Hall road on to Z. W-. Evans’ farm, over Pollock Swamp, then turning left at T ohn White’s farm to Walter Miller’s filling station on Route 32; (5) from Center Hill to Cisco, turning right and going out to Route 32 at Alfred Perry’s farm. Mary Kelly, colored, was arrested shortly after she shot a cousin, Virgie Kelly. The shooting took place on Oakum Street opposite the Small Paradise Case. Edenton Boy Scouts, as part of the observance of Boy Scout Week, attended services in a body at Eden ton Methodist Church, when the pastor. Rev. H. F .Sur ratt, preached on the subject “The Golden Rule.” .Though Jesse Harrell and David Warren had planned to launch into the furniture business, the. latter decided not to be one of the part ners. Mr. Harrell, however, proceeded with his plans and Was joined by J. P. Partin, who for many years operat ed the Bridge Turn Service Station. The doors of the Oakum Street USO opened to the public. This extension of the USO was for colored service men at the Edenton Naval Air Station and the opening featured a very interesting program. Despite' the fact ,that the Ziegler building on Broad Street had been sold, Mrs. Heywood Ziegler announced that the Ziegler Funeral Home would continue to op erate,-with plans to erect a funeral home at the Ziegler residence at the corner of Broad and Gale Streets. , By SAM COX Lloyd C. Bunch, Chairman of the Albemarle Soil and Water Conservation District Supervisors, has been notified that the “Northeaster”, the District’s monthly newsletter, has won second place in the Southeastern Area of the 1965 National Newsletter con test. The “Northeaster” was entered in competition with several hundred other news letters sent to district coop erators and supporters in their respective districts throughout the 13 Southeast ern Stales. The purpose of the local publication is to keep the public informed and to help spread the word of conservation. Mr. Bunch, also the first vice president of the North- Carolina Association of Soil and Water Conservation Dis trict Supervisors, was on hand at the 20th Annual Na tional Association of Soil and Water Conservation District Convention in New Orleans, Louisiana, Monday, Febru ary 7 to receive a framed certificate and a SSO check for the District’s accomplish ment. The National News letter contest is sponsored by the Farjn and Industrial Equipment Institute. William T. Klein, Chairman of the FIEI Soil and Water Conser vation Committee, made the presentation. .
