Nearly everyone 65 and
over can receive Medicare,
even if they don’t receive so
cial security benefits, or even
if they have never worked
under social security, he
added. But, a person will
have this protection only if
he applies for it.
Wyatt outlined the steps
othed groups of people 65 or
older should take to get
Medicare protection.
1. If you are still working,
even if you don’t plan to re
tire now, phone, or write
your social security office.
You will need to apply for
ooth the basic hospital pro
tection and the voluntary
aedical insurance, covering
primarily doctors’ fees. All
social security offices are
open on Saturday mornings
to serve you. If you can,
bring proof of your date of
birth with you.
2. If you haven’t worked
under social security, or have
not worked long enough to
get cash benefits, get in touch
with your social security of
fice. You can still have hos
pital and medical insurance
if you apply. If you can,
bring proof of your date of
birth with you.
3. Remember that the so
cial security office will mail
you a simple form or will
send a representative to your
home to take your application
if you are not able to travel.
All you have to do is get a
message to the office saying
you want to apply.
Hospital insurance will cost
nothing after a person re
tires. People who sign up
for medical insurance agree
to pay $3 monthly premium.
The Federal Government will
pay an equal amount. Pre
mium payments will not be
gin until a person’s protec
tion starts.
For more information, get
in touch with the Greenville
social security district office,
located at. 207 Boyd Avenue.
They will be glad to answer
your questions.

Bonds are now a more at

ever before, Graham White,
volunteer chairman of the
savings bonds program in
Chowan County, said today
in commenting on the in

4.15 per cent.
White pointed out that the
new rate applies from De

In announcing this new
interest rate, President John

it strengthens the economy
