The 42nd annual contest Dedication Held At Merry Hill - The new ’ Post Office at Merry Hill was dedicated Sunday afternoon, April 17, at 2:30 o’dock at a very impressive ceremony. Britt Smithwick acted as master of ceremonies. Am erica was sung by the con gregation. Mrs. Owen Bar field played the- electric or gan and the invocation was given by Rev. Prances Cord pey, . pastor of the Merry Hill Baptist Church. V A very cordial welcome to fill present - was given by Mrs, E. J. Pruden, Jr., who is president of . the local Parent-Teacher Association. S. V. Cowand, one of the oldest residents of Merry Hill and a retired rural carrier, gave a history of the Merry Hill Post Office since he moved to Merry Hill in 1914. An address was given by Congressman Walter Jones, also an address by the pos tal service officer, J. W. Winburn of Raleigh. The flag presentation and flag raising by three local young National Guardsmen, Martin White, Charlie Bill Phelps and Bert Willis, Jr., was very impressive. Rev. Frances Cordrey sang the national anthem as the flag was being raised. The benediction was given by R. S. Taylor of the Cape hart’s Baptist Church. The critical analysis gave a distribution of newspaper scoring and the ChowSnian received lOO.per cent on the following division* topics spe cified. A. Content: 1. Art, 2. Photography. B. Timeli ness: 1. Recency of news appropriately treated. 2. Com ing events anticipated and announced. C. Writing and editing. 1. Sports. 2. Head lines (complete statements used proper and verb tense and voice). 3. Copyreading and editing, evidence of con sistency in style. 4. Proof reading, evidence of atten tion given to mechanical de tail. D. Makeup: Editorial page masthead appropriate ly placed and condensed pertinent data included. Other pages. 1. Lists and data properly paragraphed or boxed. 2. Headlines (ar rangement, effort made to avoid cluttering and jam ming of headlines. The critical analysis of fered constructive criticism as well as praise. The cri tical analysis is for the next ’school term to use as its guideline. The incoming edi tor-in-chief is Wilma Leigh Nixon with Belinda Perry as associate editor. As quoted from the ana lysis sheet “The makeup is well planned and neatly ex tended. It is easy to tell that a commercial teaaher who cares has had a hand in the production.” Mrs. Marvis H.
