Senior Citizens Are Being Aided "A basic goal of an en lightened society must be to provide opportunities which enable older people to keep and strengthen their inde- ! pendence and dignity.” With those words, Presi- | dent Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed May as Senior Citizens Month. The Consumer and Mar keting Service of the U. S. Department of Agriculture j and the Public Welfare have ) invited local senior citizens to inquire during May about the food stamp program—as I part of the national senior i| citizens month observance. I In cooperation with the | national observance of senior citizens month, the U. S. Department of Agriculture’s Consumer and Marketing Service has joined the State Board of Public Welfare in urging senior citizens in Chowan County to inquire about assistance under the food stamp program. Fre quently, the Consumer and Marketing Service poipts out, senior citizens find that they are eligible to take part in the food assistance program. The two agencies say that many persons, who after re tirement, are forced to live on reduced incomes, often are eligible to take part in the food stamp program. The program is designed to aid low-income families The program enables par ticipants whose income is within certain specified lev els to buy more and better food for the same amount of money they usually spend on food. The only differ ence is food stamp coupons are used instead of cash to pay for food. The food coupons may be used to buy food at any lo cal retail food store auth orized by the Consumer and Marketing Service. Most of the stores in the local food stamp program area are authorized to accept the food coupons. Tolley Initiated Into New Group GREENVILLE Samuel Roland Tolley, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. R.
