After 38 Years
Miss Emma E. Foreman
rounded out 38 years as a
public school teacher on
June 3.
The popular teacher taught
in the Edenton, Chowan
County and Washington City
school units. For the past
12 years she has been in the
Washington system.
Dr. Jack Lawrie, superin
tendent, and Fred M. Malli
son, chairman of the board
of education, paid tribute to
Miss Foreman at a Parent-
Teacher Association function
in Washington recently.
Miss Foreman has taught
in the elementary grades
during her entire career.
She received her degree
from Livingston College and
later was awarded her mas
ter’s degree from A&T Col
lege in Greensboro.

23.4% Wage Gains

There was an average of 4,716 employes covered dur
ing xhe quarter.
The third quarter average employe figure was 1,562,
with « payroll of $1,414,000, or an average wage of
$69.63.
Cheek reported figures for the second quarter of the
year as follows: 1,560 average employes; $1,331,000
payroll; and average weekly wage of $65.63.
During the first quarter, there were 1,505 workers
covered and the average weekly wage was $64.15. To
tal payroll was $1,255,000.
Manufacturing employment was up from 730 during
the first quarter to 904 at the end of the fourth quar
ter. The average weekly wage increased from $69.92
to $75.20 during the same period of time.
It was noted that in 1961 the average number of em
ployes in manufacturing was 594 with a payroll of
$397,000. The 1965 average was 822 employes, and an
annual poyroll of $763,000.
figures for 1964 show average number of employes
covered by the laws as 1,388 with an average weekly
wage of $62.76.
