' This Is The Life By DONALD THOMAS Insuaiiel Baptist Church HOW TO STUDY GOD’S WORD A lot of people say, “I can’t understand the Bible.” Why can’t you? Because the natural man can’t understand the things of God because they are foolish unto him. Here are five ways to study them: (1) When you open your Bible, remember it’s' God’s Holy Word and not man’s. For holy -men of God spoke’ as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. (2) Read God’s Word as if it were written to you only. These things were written for our learning through pa tience and comfort. (3) Study with prayer. (4) Study with meditation, ex pecting God’s help, comfort, blessing and success in living for God. (5) As you read, pray that the light will shine, into your heart and you can, know God’s Word. Study to know God’s will and do it. Be Christ-like in life, holy in living and humble in ser vice. Accept Christ today, friend, and see if your life won’t be changed. J For in this lesson Jesus em * ahasizes the dangers that lie J in the attitude of heart anu > mind which one has toward [ those who are around us. > For the act of sinning has ! its roots in the realm of the mental attitudes. The un faithful wife or husband does | not become so spontaneously; the act of infidelity is the | outcome of one’s unfaithful i thoughts and emotions; the thief does not go out and ! steal on the spur of the mo ment; the theft is committed after the thought has oc curred and been examined, and the act deemed feasible. And whether or not some thing was actually stolen, or the bonds cf matrimony physically , violated, Jesus held that such violation had taken place because the thought had been harbored in the first place. Such purity of purpose very few of us can claim, if we are painfully honest with , ourselves. We can only hope that in guarding ourselves against such thoughts we are diligently drying to be wor thy of our concepts of Chris Colonial Motor Co., of Edenton BUICK - OLDS - PONTIAC GMC TRUCKS ' Belk - Tyler's EDENTON’S SHOPPING CENTER W. We, like Jesus, must be concerned with the intang ibles. The word spoken in anger, the blow struck in violence, the hate engendered for whatever reason jeal ousy, envy, frustration—■ these all lead to a form cf murder and self-destruction —murder of the immortal soul. Note very carefully the passages in Matthew 5, verses 23-24. In these verses Jesus cautioned against shal low outward appearances of piety. The gift laid before lhe altar was not to be laid there lightly. In order for it to be acceptable before God, it must be laid there in hu mility and with reverence; above all, it must be offer ed: with love. The man who made the offering was. him self, to be acceptable in God’s eyes; otherwise his gift would be but an empty gesture. It he had maligned a fellow man, or if he nur tured rancour in his heart against another, then he was to go to that brother and make restitution. Then—and only then—would he be wor thy to lay his gift at God’s feet. Note, also, that it was the one who would worship, and pay an act of respect, who was urged to go and seek his brother, instead of wait ing passively for that broth er to come to him. For to wrong another is bad enough but to seek to worship with an unforgiving,,, unrepentant heart is an even greater sin. Jesus also held it to be a sin to commit murder by slander, for the tongue can be as deadly as the sword. It, therefore, behooves us to guard our tongues as zeal ously as we should guard our thoughts, lest we murder not only the good name of an other. but our immortal soul as well. Resp.ect for others is born out of love, and love in' turn, has its roots in Divine love. Gcd’s sacrifice of His Son for the saving of man kind is Love personified.
