PAGE FOUTEEN Bible News By MARY ALLRED IbaMf «f Warn*’* Bw*kw» MM, Motau Blbl* Sociaty A poor rancher named Cristobal Matorras fell ill in Palo A Pique, Argen tina, one winter not long ago. The clpsest medical facilities are in the town of Oran, 60 miles away, and the roads leading there are passable only in summer. Somehow £ris tobal was able to make the journey despite the obstacles. His trip to the hospital took Cristobal past a church, where someone of fered to sell him a Bible. He bought it and took it back with him to Palo A Pique. Sharing 1 the Bible with his friends, Cristobal discovered another copy in a local tavern, 'aSp ha and the tavern keeifer be- This Is The Life By D. R. Traffic jams are reported all over the city and outside re ports are that this is hap pening all over the world. I can’t understand it," said the sergeant” Yes, this will happen when Jesus comes for His own, the saints. How about you, (friend? Are you ready to meet Jesus? If not, then please prepare now to meet God, for to morrow, yes, even five minutes from now, may be too late. If it’s not Heav en, it will be hell for eter nity. The tavern keeper hesi tated at first when Cris tobal suggested that they invite others to discuss the Gospel and to form a “congregation.” Bptr; fin ally he yielded, and the tavern became a church. The tavern congregation began to grow and ope of its new members bought a hymn book bn a visit to a distant tow'n. The '.'little group sang their- songs of i praise to tunes im provised themselves. To the best of their ability, they organized their church work, using the Scriptures as their only guide. Soon a similar group was formed in Temera Atada, som? 30 miles from here.' Later other con gregations were organized in Miraflores, in Las (lores and at El Chagua ral, over 75 miles away. When Antonio Parisi, a Bible Society colporteur, reached this isolated area he was greatly surprised to find these congregations organized solely on the basis of -Scripture reading and study. The music was rather weird, but the de votion of these dedicated people was almost unbe lievable. - Recently a donation of jurr. almost anything Then order it, sou have a wide selection when ordering color telephones for your home or business. Lesson Text: Luke 18:1 to 19:27. Most parents of college age students have heard the plaintive complaint from the college profes sor “They don’t know HOW to study.” And— confronted with failing grades and the prospect of a stormy scene with our undergraduate progeny our vehement retort to the effect that they should be TAUGHT how to study, dies stillborn on our lips as we remember the hund reds of dollars invested in the various brands of na tionally approved encyclo paedias that were to make little Jeanie or Jimmy an A-1 student practically overnight! How many times, as we struggled to snake that monthly pay ment out of the house keeping money, were we ‘frustrated to the point of committing mayhem when informed blithely: "But ithe answer isn’t IN the encyclopedia.” Os course, the answer to the particu lar question that was per plexing our young, WAS in the encyclopedia—along with a few thousand oth ers. Jeanie or Jimmy— just didn’t have time to dig for it, because the sun was shining and the play mate of the moment was outside, prancing impati ently to be off in pursuit qjf furv aed, games. Too often, we parents provide the wherewithal to give our children a “good life” and then do not fol low through with time and attention, thereby, en abling them to put to good BELK - TYLER’S EDENTON’S SHOPPING CENTER W. We strive to impart knowledge to our young people, but fail to take the time to supervise the usage of such knowledge. The same is true of our use (or mis-use) of pray er. Prayer is a vital part of the life of every Chris tian and has been since the days of the disciples. Yet, how often, in refer ring back through Bibli cal studies, do we fint those very disciples cry ing out, in supplication “Lord, teach us to pray.” Prayer is communioi with God and—as such should be approachec quietly and reverently h a receptive frame of mind Not arrogantly, as por trayed so forcefully in Luke 18, verses 9 through 13 the parable of the Pharisee and the publican. But humbly, as contrasted in those same verses—the difference between the Pharisee’s righteous and self-laudatory attitude and the publican’s sense of un worthiness. The Pharisee was insin cere in his approach; he stood where all men could see him, and he commun ed, primarily, on his vir tues! he was not commun ing with God —he was thinking out loud, for men to hear. The publi can, on the other hand, stood in the shadows. He demonstrated humility of spirit, too embarrassed to raise his eyes heaven ward; all he could muster was an acknowledgement of sin and a petition for mercy. We have been taught that God is all-seeing; for while we may mislead our fellowmen, God knows what 'is in the heart It, therefore, behooves us not to sell God short.
