M YEARS AGO Chowan County' Com missioners passed twb very timely resolutions, as well as opened the purse strings to appropriate SSO toward the cost of publishing a booklet to be widely dis tributed in the hope of ad vertising Edenton and Chowan County to the out side world. One resolu tion urged Governor Clyde Hoey to reappoint Julien Wood as a member of the State Highway and Public Works Commission. The other had to do with a re quest for the Highway Commission building a road leading from the new Albemarle Sound bridge into Edenton. Chowan County’s new teveh-member school board met and re-elected W. J. Taylor as superintendent of schools and S. E. Mor ris as board president. Edenton Rotarians and Lions were discussing a peculiar sort of amuse ment when plans were an nounced to stage a donkey baseball game between the two civic clubs. With the realization of electricity for use in the homes in upper Chowan County in toe offing, a number of residents in the Cross Roads section were hopeful of still adding to the comforts of life by having running water in their homes as well by connecting with the new ..well at Chowan High School. County Commis sioners turned thumbs down on the request, feel ing that a precedent might be established that might reach embarrassing propor tions and intimating that they were of the opinion that the county schools should not go into the water works business. Mack Gregory accepted the position as service manager at toe Chowan Motor Company. Sponsored by the Ameri can Legion Auxiliary, a two-act operetta, “On Mid summer’s Day,” was pre sented in the high school auditorium with 74 child ren taking part. Wendell Copeland was selected as valedictorian of the senior class at Edenton High School. Workmen were repair ing the end of the Muni cipal Building which was damaged by a coal truck while backing out between the fire department head quarters and the old Post Office building. 20 YEARS AGO Judge Chester Morris, newly appointed judge, in opening a term of Chowan Superior Court, paid glow ing tribute to Judge C. E. Thompson, who was assas sinated in Elizabeth City. Mrs. L. A. Patterson was elected president of the Edenton Parent - Teacher Association to succeed Mrs. J. Clarence Leary. The association voted to spon sor teenage group gather ings each Friday night at the Officers’ Club at the Naval Air Station. Mr. and Mrs. John G. Over 200 members of the New Bern Consistory and other Masons and their wives attended a Scottish Rite party held at toe Officers’ Club at the Naval Air Station. The principal speaker was Ed mund Harding of Washing ton, N. C. Chowan County poultry men competed with poul try breeders in 12 south eastern states in the 1947 phase of the nationwide Chicken-of-Tomorrow pro gram. General J. Van Metts, state director of Selective Service, praised Mrs. Belle W. Parker for her assist ance and loyalty as clerk of the Chowan County Draft Board. With 12 candidates al ready in the field for 11 city offices to be filled in the Democratic primary election, R. C. Holland submitted a letter to The Herald aimed primarily to prospective candidates for the Board of Public Works. Five pertinent questions were asked regarding the policy of operation of toe Board of Public Works which, Mr. Holland stated, have been reason for no little comment upon the part of many interested citizens and which he be lieved should be answered by prospective candidates. Mrs. Nathan Dail was named chairman of the cancer drive in Chowan County. Peter Carlton, executive secretary of the Edenton- Chowan Chamber of Com merce and Merchants As sociation, was named au thorized interviewer for the Gallop Poll in Chowan County. With a decided change in the weather, officials and recruits of the Bing hamton and Denver base ball teams got down to real-hard training-with the .going to pro* •vide._ basebgjl weather in. contrast to football-type weather experienced prac tically ever since their ar rival in Edenton. Miss Susan Thigpen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Thigpen, for the fifth consecutive time, won a Superior rating in the spring competitive festical of the Northeastern Region of the North Carolina Fed erated Music Clubs held in Windsor. Choral Society Elects Officers At a recent meeting of the Albemarle Choral So ciety, Southeastern Divi sion, Mrs. W. C. Moore, nominating chairman, pre sented the following slate of officers for the coming year. The slate was unani mously elected: John Becker, president; Mrs. Jean Shipman of Hertford, vice president; Mrs. Paul Wallace, secre tary, and Mrs. William Gardner, treasurer. Becker, newly elected president, is a former member of the Charlotte Choral Society. An advisory committee of past presidents was chosen to assist Becker. They are Mrs. A1 Phillips, Mrs. Thomas Chears and Mrs. Frank Elliott. Mrs. Elliott is finishing her term of office for this year. The Choral Society will give its final concert, of this season on May 14 at the Edenton Episcopal Church, when it will do Mendelssohn’e Elijah. HIT THE JACKPOT!
