Questionable If it weren’t for Edison, we’d all be watching TV by candlelight. —Hyades Hurricane, Fleet P. O. THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY, MAY 25, 1967. wishes to receive credit for having planted cotton and be eligible for his cotton payments. Certification Certifying the crop acre age on farms in 1967 must bo done by the operator of each individual farm. However, a farm operator may designate to someone in writing, to act in his place to report the acreage. This acreage must be ac cuiate according to the farmer’s knowledge. Many farmers believe the fields planted are important in certifying the acreage. This county office does not have to know what fields you have planted, only the to tal acreage planted. It will be time saving to both the farmer and the office em ployees if each farmer has Iris acreage totaled at the time of the visit to the of fice for certifying. Farmers wishing any in formation on certifying the acreage planted on their farm, are encouraged to come into the county of fice for assistance. The fi nal date to certify to wheat is May 31 and June 30 for cotton, tobacco, pea nuts, corn and other land uses. If God can forgive' again, so can you. It matters not about yesterday, And tomorrow’s still too far away, Count today, to thine own self be true. Sometimes it’s pretty hard not to get “down in the dumps,” especially when every day living causes so many perplexi ties and frustrations. When I get to feeling low, I try to remember one thing of which my mother remind ed me. It was always: “This, too, shall pass away.” The weather this past week was nearly perfect for pleasant living— not too cool and not actually hot — but lots of wonderful sun shine. It really makes me too ambitious and then I find out that I’m just not the “spring chicken” I’d like to be. Now that’s FRUSTRATION! Here are some good definitions of time taken from an article I’ve read recently: To the philoso pher, time is sorrow and distance; to youth it is something that goes on forever; to the poet, it’s a morning glory dead at noon; to the old man, it’s something that slipped through his fingers; to the woman in labor, it is something that has mo mentarily stopped. Every thing is a slave to time. What is time? You know most of us take so many things for granted. We may remem ber to say a verbal word of thanks and that’s that. A pleasant change from this came about this past week. Angie Wright (Mrs. David) said her thanks to a group of ladies in a very sweet way, which was enjoyed so very much. Angie was among several women to attend a workshop on chair-caneing, taught by Mrs. Helen Wood, Mrs. Hazel Byrum and Miss Harriett Leary. I, too, at tended the workshop, tak ing along my chair to be re-caned. Our instructors were most kind and pati ent and we all accomplish ed work to be proud of. Anyhow, this past week Mrs. Wright—Angie—had a tea to show her apprecia tion to these ladies and we were all invited. She served it English style and as such was very delicious. By the way, Dr. and Mrs. Wright certainly have an attractive home overlook ing Pembroke Creek and their three nice children make it complete. Nice gai—Angie. Another nice person, liked by everyone, is Mar tha (Mrs. Clarence Brit ton), who has a cheery word and smile wherever she goes. And by the way, Martha always enjoys eat ing fish—even to herring breakfasts. Here is a recipe for a delicious des sert, just in time for the fresh strawberry season— this from Martha, too. Dissolve 1 package of strawberry jello in a pint of heavy cream, then whip. Prepare three pints ai strawberries, slice and sprinkle with % cup pow dered sugar. Cut fresh angel food cake in 3 lay ers. Spread cream on first layer, then berries. Repeat on second layer and frost New Books At Local Library New books received re cently at Shepard-Pruden Memorial Library are: Black Sheep, a novel by Georgette Heyer. Next to the bloodmobile, the summer swimming in struction is the most popu lar Red Cross program in Chowan County. However, it is in danger due to the lack of qualified instruc tors. Murray Ashley reports that a course for instruc tors is being conducted at Camp Hanover, Richmond, Va., June 8-18 and the Red Cross will pay the $65 fee for qualified persons to at tend. Applicants must be high school graduates. Those interested in mak ing application for this course are asked to contact Murray Ashley. top layer and entire cake with cream.
