The Showboat’
Cast Returning
WILMINGTON They
steamed away to war two
decades ago aboard a
proud battleship nicknam

month they’ll again step
onto the solid teak deck to
hold a reunion.
The event will be the
fifth annual convention and
reunion of the USS North
Carolina Battleship Asso

28-30 aboard the famed
warship at its special har

A total attendance of
some 350 is anticipated.
Former crew members will
arrive from 25 states, in
cluding a delegation from
California.
They’ll register in style
on the 28th in the recent
ly renovated Admiral’s
Cabin aboard ship. Then
they’ll settle into a full
schedule of meetings, a
picnic, an area tour, a
dance and sea-story ses
sion and free time to roam
their former compartments,
on the batteship. They’ll
also see the ship’s sound
and light spectacular en
titled “The Immortal Show
boat”
Many things have chang
ed since these men “ran”
the battleship more than 20
years ago. Now they’re
scattered across the coun
try working as milkmen,
steel workers, doctors, and
in just about every other
trade or profession.
And the USS North Ca
rolina has become a state
memorial to all Carolinians
who died in the war, berth
ed permanently in the
Cape Fear River at Wil
mington.
