cline in the number of
farmers, reports Dr. Lloyd
Davis,, head of extension in
the U. S. Department of
Agriculture, the nation
still has 11,000 county ex
tension workers, about the
same as 10 years-Vago.
With supervisors, adminis
trators and college special
ists, the total is 14,000. At
least half still are doing
some agricultural work.
"The program costs some
S2OO million a year, of
which Congress appropri
ates 33 per cent. A similar
portion comes from the
states and the rest from
county and other local
sources. This arrangement
explains the label ‘Co
operative Extension.’
“Why an army of field
workers in this day of fast
communications? No one
has found a satisfactory re
placement for the personal
being sought is as follows:
The condemnation and
appropriation, for highway
purposes, of a certain in
terest or estate in that
certain, parcel of land lying
and being in Third Town
ship, Chowan County,
North Carolina, and being
that parcel of land con
veyed to William Cart

public lands on the basis
of 30,000 acres per mem

tural colleges, and farm
research was born.”
