But a paperback that was published Without fan fare last September and without a suggestive cover is proving to be the excep tion that proves the rule. If it’s going rate of about 25,000 copies a day con tinues, the runaway best seller will rack up sales at over nine million in the next 12 months. Priced at 25 cents com pared with the average paperback now selling for 68 cents, the 600 - page sleeper sports an eye catching cover of charcoal gray newspaper mastheads from around the world as background for the title, “Good News For Modern Man.” The “Good News” is the American Bible So ciety’s fresh, idiomatic New Testament in Today’s English Version featuring almost 200 lively line drawings by Anne Vallot ton, a contemporary Swiss artist. In a little over six (months after publication, more than two million copies of the TEV had been distributed in this country and overseas with over 720,000 additional ones on order. By early April approximately 1,850,- 000 TEVs plus over 13,000 special imprints had been distributed in the United States. At the same time, more than 310,000 copies, including over 83,000 spe cial imprints for Canada and Australia, had been shipped overseas. These figures are im pressive considering that rare is the best seller with a press run exceeding 50,000 copies, although press runs of 80,000 to 100,000 are not uncommon for top grade Scriptures. But what makes the statis tics even more spectacular is that while Bibles are marketed in about 5,000 stores across she country, the ABS sells its Scriptures in this country only through its New York headquarters, regional of fices and associated Bible Societies. > Published during the 150th anniversary of the ABS last year, the TEV is sold at the amazing low FORD COMMANDER Today’s most |kl El Ml “ k fismfflES NEW 11 tractor with a FORDS FORD 5000 rj IlfC New leader in | f FORD 4000 tfliTJLk wILLU capacity in the ■ ■ ■ ■ ■■■ three-four plow I i—*"**- ” BT^ylHu DUILI FORD 3000 TO Extra-margin * m WORK FORD 2000 fiSfcjLt. THOMAS Immanuel Baptist Church ARE YOU READY? Take your Bible, please, and turn with me to I Thess. 4:13-18. Today, I want to ask you a very important question. Are you ready to meet Jesus? As we watch television and read our newspapers about the war in the Middle East, we see Bible pro phecy being fulfilled. In the Bible we see Noah preaching to the people about the great flood that was coming, but they only laughed and said he was crazy. John the Baptist went about preaching, “Repent ye, the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.” He was pre paring the people to meet Jesus. Today, people are liv ing and acting like the people did in Noah’s day. They have forgotten God and only call on Him in time of trouble. How many of us think we have done something for God if we give Him an hour or two on Sunday. If you should die right now, would you be ready to meet Jesus? He is coming back. Are you ready? My heart is very sad because some of you will reject Christ as your saviour and will live in this wcrld only to please yourself. Are your sins covered under the blood of Jesus? I love each and everyone of you who are reading this. Won’t you please corng to Christ be fore it is too late? He cbufd corfie *nfeybfe the next minute. Are you ready? The Bible says: “In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet, for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorrupt ible, and we shall be changed.”—l Cor. 15:52. Originally designed for people with a grade school iducation, those for whom English is a second langu age and to reach an esti mated 10 million Americans who do not read the Bible, the TEV is proving popu lar with people of all ages and levels of learning. Even seminary students and scholars find the TEV provides a refreshingly new approach to the Scriptures. With its typography and layout as contemporary as the language, the TEV has been aptly called “the New Testament in street clothes.” It is the first in any language to be based on a Greek text of the New Testament that was published in the spring of 1966 by the ABS in co operation with the British and Foreign Bible Society, the National Bible Society of Scotland, the Nether lands Bible Society and the Worttenburg Bible So ciety of Germany. Dr. Robert G. Bratcher, ABS translations special secre tary, prepared the basic TEV translation in asso ciation with a team of Biblical scholars. Most translations are made by scholars in the field, with the help and supervision of the ABS, which then sponsors the translation and publishes it. A few translations are done directly by the ABS, with the TEV New Testa ment being the first Eng lish translation by the so ciety. Lesson Text: Acts 13. The start of this new quarter finds the empha sis still on witnessing for Christ. Certainly, in studying the enthusiastic Spirit-led witness of Paul, we should be inspired in our determina tion to do our part to spread the glorious words of the Gospel. If we study seriously, in retrospect it will be quickly seen that—although the progress of the Gospel was efttimes threatened in the early days of Christianity—it was never hindered by mortal man. That challenge confronts us to day, when the forces of evil seem rampant all over the world. Our lesson today points out very forcefully that the Gospel was intended for all men—not just a . select few. And today, as never before, it fills our needs just as gloriously as it filled the needs of mankind all those thousands of years ago. Over and over again, as we study the Bible, we see that God reaches through men and churches, offering salvation to all. Barnabas and Saul (later called Paul) were especially chosen by God—the Church merely released them to answer His call. Perhaps the word “merely” is not especially applicable in this instance; for in this act of release can be seen the action of a far-seeing church bedy. Missionary work is not just an individual responsibility, but a church-involved thing. And the church at Antioch was a living, breathing, expanding exposition of missionary work. It had its inception through Paul’s mis sions; it was a living proof of what could be accomplished through earnest and dedicated preaching. Therefore it is not surprising that it applied itself earnestly to promoting the spread of Christianity to the unenlightened, whatever their race or creed. This “world outlook” is essential to our churches today. A church that is obedient to the Word of God, and His Will, will pulsate with life; it will not be contained in narrow defines. Paul and Barnabas addressed themselves, first to members of. the church. When they were refuted by some, they then proceeded to spread the Word to the Gentiles, and with great success. For Paul and Barnabas were shrewd enough to realize that they must gain the people’s at tention in some spectacular way, as we will see tin our. nestt ilsaaon -on the healing of the man lame from birth, they proclaimed to everyone that they had something to offer. They “broke ground” with the tools they had at hand, and Continued on Page 13 BELK - TYLER’S EDENTON’S SHOPPING CENTER W. E. Smith GENERAL MERCHANDISE “Rocky Hock” PHONE 221-4031 —EDENTON M. G.
