Expansion and reorganiz ation of the administration setup of die North Carolina State Employment Service dethroned Edenton as a district headquarters, with Williamston being designat ed as the place for the dis trict office, which had been operated so success fully out of Edenton for several years. Perhaps one of the great est bits of civic improve ment Edenton had at tempted in half a century was about to get under way with the rehabilitation of the old Cupola House. Responses to the Cupola House Association appeals for financial assistance were very generous and permitted painting the building and reproduction of repaneling. C. D. Stewart, a steward of the Methodist Church, was named superintendent of the Sunday School at a quarterly conference. That there would be a heavy demand for the spe cial stamp issued by the Post Office Department of the 350th anniversary of the birth of Virginia Dare was apparent by the fact that Postmaster C. E. Kra mer reported having re ceived many requests for these stamps. Following a second joint meeting of the County Commissioners, Board of Health and Board of Edu cation, Chowan County’s Alcoholic Board of Control was completed with J. B. Webb named as the third member, winning out over R. H. Hollowell, B. W. Dixon was rushed to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Norfolk due to an acute at tack of appendicitis. The tentative tax rate for Edenton was set at sl.lO from SI.OO the previ ous year. Chowan County Com missioners instructed Clerk of Court Richard D. Dixon to have the ivy removed from the Court House, the opinion being that the thick growth was detri mental to the interior and exterior of the building. Graham White’s stolen Pontiac automobile was found abandoned in a woods near Suffolk to gether with another car which was evidently stol en and abandoned. Drs. J. A. Powell and Martin Wisely moved into their new quarters on the first floor of the Citizens Bank building. Dr. L. P. C. 20 YEARS AGO - Town Councilmen at a special session set the tax rate for Edenton at $1.50 per SIOO property valua tion. The overall budget called for the expenditure of $82,009.00 ,which" com pared with $70,751.00 the previous year. The prop erty valuation for the year was $4,119,000.00. Edenton Colonials were leading in the Albemarle League, having won five of the last games played. At a special meeting of heads of organizations, called by the Chamber of Commerce, the idea of re organizing a band in Edenton was discussed. An other meeting -was called for the purpose of proceed ing to form a band. As the result of Windsor baseball fans assaulting Umpire B. W. Wright after a game in Windsor be tween the Rebels and Hertford, the Windsor team’s franchise was re voked by W. H. Oakey, Jr., of Hertford, president of the Albemarle League. The club was also fined S3OO for not providing adequate police protection. Later, however, at a meeting of the league directors, Mr. Oakey’s decision to revoke the franchise was over ruled but the S3OO fine was upheld. President Oakey subsequently resigned but later agreed to continue as president. Lester Jordan, popular pitcher for the Edenton Colonials, opened Lester’s Place on the Windsor highway near the U. S. Fish Hatchery, where he served meals. Dr. George T. Crawford, local chiropractor, moved his office from the Citizens Bank building to the office next to the Hotel Joseph Hewes lobby. The Herald began a series of four articles to inform motorists what they should know in order to obtain a driver’s license in North Carolina. Chowan County Com missioners employed Reed, Hoyt & Washburn of New York as the county’s bond attorneys for the proposed election of a $400,000 bond issue for school improve ments which were deemed absolutely necessary. The matter of providing a modem heating plant for the ancient Chowan Coun ty Court House again cropped up at a meeting of Chowan County Commis sioners. Chairman W. W. Byrum was authorized to secure bids for the installa tion of a safe and modem heating plant. Chowan County Com missioners were presented a petition which requested the addition of an audi torium to the Rocky Hock School to be included in the first bond issue pro posed by the county. J. H Conger, president of the newly organized Chowan Golf Club, was very optimistic that before the week was out enough members would have been secured to assure $6,000 which was needed to con struct an up-to-date nine hole golf course at the Naval Air Station. James E. Wood and W. W. Byrum were appointed to the board of directors of the National Peanut Coun cil. Melvin Layton was chos en football and basketball coach of the Edwin M.
