PAGE EIGHT From The Chowan Herald Yellowed Pages 20 YEARS AGO In the neighborhood of 300 members of the Cho wan County Farm Bureau and their wives gathered in the Edenton armory to attend the annual meeting of the organization, at which Asa C. Griffin was elected president. George Moffett was em ployed as an Edenton pa trolman to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of E. R. Tolley. Due to a leading boiler, services were called off at (he Methodist Church until repairs could be made. Miss Carolyn Lee Elliott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Josiah Elliott, wrote and directed a play, “Adam’s Apple,' 1 a one-act comedy which was presented at Flora MacDonald College. According to post cards sent to a group of Edenton men under 35 years of age, an effort was being made to organize a Junior Cham ber of Commerce in Eden ton. According to a report by the Tile Council of Am erica, farm property in Chowan County was worth more than $4,138,000 and rural homes here and throughout the state were in the best condition in history. Edenton firemen were called out to fight a very stubborn fire at the home of Maggie Felton on West Carteret Street. Mrs. Charles P. Exams Taken By Students GREENVILLE Fifty candidates for positions with the federal govern ment took the Federal Ser vice Entrance Examination at East Carolina University ; recently. ! Furney James, director of the ECU Placement Ser vice, said the test is a re quirement for college sen iors or graduates who seek a career with the federal government. W. Davis was elected chairman of Chowan Hos pital trustees to succeed Albert Byrum, who had served in that capacity since trustees were ap pointed at the outset of the movement to secure a hospital. For the first time in the history of Tidewater Coun cil, two brothers were pro moted to the rank of Eagle Scouts at the same time. Jack and Frank Habit were promoted to Eagle Scouts at a Court of Honor spon sored by the Edenton Lions Club. With eight inches of snow on the ground, Eden ton and Chowan County experienced its deepest snow in over 20 years. A large number of travelers were stranded. Hotel Jo seph Hewes, as well as all tourist homes, were filled to capacity and at the ho tel it was necessary to press into service the old dining room in order to serve breakfast to over night guests. Mayor Leroy Haskett called upon Coaches Nick George and Tex Lindsay to cancel all basketball and other recreational ac tivities which required heat in the armory. This action was taken because there was no coal in Eden ton and no assurance when any more would arrive. Mrs. Wallace Goodwin! was installed as president' of the Chowan County j Council of Home Demon-: stration Clubs. Mrs. Graham Byrum died ! in Norfolk General Hos- J pital following a serious; brain operation. McMullan, secretary of Edenton - Chowan Chamber of Commerce, that he would be unable to attend and speak, the annual ban quet was postponed to fit in the governor’s schedule. Work on improvement and additions at the United States Fish Hatch ery began when 25 WPA workers under the direc tion of W. E. Baker were transferred for preliminary operations. What was probably one of the greatest improve ments in receipt and dis patch of mail in the Eden ton Post Office went into effect when it was an nounced that the Edenton- Suffolk star route was to be reversed, leaving Eden ton in the morning instead ot afternoon. Whichard was wearing smiles when he learned that, at his re quest, the County Commis sioners appropriated $450 toward wiping out the debt of erecting the new arm ory. Chowan County Com missioners were informed that a Negro farm agent would be placed here until July 1 at no expense to the county to serve Cho wan and Perquimans Coun ties. The new agent was J. B. Small who was born in Bertie County and edu cated at A. & T. College at Greensboro. Dr. M. P. Whichard ten dered his resignation as county physician. J. J. Long returned from Du ke Hospital, Durham, where he spent several days taking treatments. John Q. Eason, 39, a native of Chowan County and former resident of Edenton, was instantly I killed when a wood saw which he was operating near Columbia, broke and split his head almost in half. J. Augustus Moore was; able to sit up in Norfolk i General Hospital. Stuart X. Stephenson, former Edenton boy and sports editor of the Mont gomery Advertiser, Mont gomery, Ala., was elected president of the South eastern Class B Baseball League. i Holmes Cited As Sales Leader Frank M.
