PAGE TWO —A JP% BROAD STREET BULLETIN \ST hr m br ' Kate i A style never changes a smile. 1 And a smile never goes out of style. It is never out of place and will suit any face. So reveal your sunny heart with a smile. Just try walking down the street some day when you’re feeling sort of blue or maybe out of sorts. Then someone comes along and gives you a cheerful smile and I’ll bet it won’t be long until your attitude changes—just from a smile. So give one to the next person you meet. We had a wonderful time on our vacation last week, when we drove from here to Rocky Mount, then tc Columbia, S. C., on to Savannah. Ga., then to Jacksonville Beach, St. Augustine and Daytona Beach. We had no dead line to meet and no spe cific time to be anywhere, which to us was great. We visited relatives and friends along the way, too, which was fun. On our way home we stopped by Caro lina Beach and visited a short time with Tom and Helen Jackson, who own and operate a fishing pier there. Os course, we tried the fishing, as we did at several places in Florida and I still say fishing in North Carolina is the best. By the way, make it a point to go fishing at Ca rolina Beach with Helen and Tcm—it’s the greatest! It’s an exciting time this weekend for the graduates and here's wishing each of them all the happy ex citement of being young, perhaps in love and the thrill of graduating and the happy summer ahead. Gol ly, I haven’t forgotten that time of my life. It was wonderfully carefree and Hospital Rates To Be Increased RALEIGH The State Board of Mental Health has approved an increase in fees for patients in the four state psychiatric hos pitals and the state-oper ated alcoholic rehabilita tion center at Butner from $4 to $7 a day, effective July 1. An increase from $2 to $3.50 per day was approv ed for the state retarda tion centers and from $2.50 to s3.ho per day for treat ment at Wright School for emotionally disturbed chil dren in Durham. According to Bill Johns ton, reimbursement officer for the State Department of Mental Health, the rea son that fees in the retard ation centers are lower is because the period of hospitalization in these fa cilities often runs into many years. Johnston said the raise in rates is necessary to keep pace with rising costs of operating the state fa cilities. They that value not praise will never do any thing worthy of praise. Just the same I don’t feel that old. In fact, I believe I’m just as happy as I was then. While visiting recently in Savannah with Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Brothers, who live there, we were taken on a tour of the town. Sa vannah, rich in history, re minds me very much ol < Edenton, only on a much , larger scale. Many of the I old homes and historic S buildings are being re-1 stored. We could hardly " take it all in. It is very beautiful and I for one would like to go back again after restoration is completed. We were privileged Tues day night to attend a din ner in Elizabeth City, un der the auspices of the Al coholism Center of the counties of Chowan, Per quimans, Pasquotank, Cur rituck and Dare. Dr. Assad Meyhandi, who was the speaker -for the occasion, gave his listeners an in sight on the problems of i alcoholism and the poten tialities of rehabilitating people with the affliction] of alcoholism. Which re- 1 minds me to say that be hind every problem or trouble there’s bound to be a reason for which help can be received. Buffs garden is flourish ing this year, better than ever. Right now we are enjoying home grown let tuce, radishes, onions, en dive and chard. Soon —we hope—there’ll be tomatoes' and string beans. These are “high - priced" vege tables, but the therapy of gardening is worth some thing. Right now is a good time to fix “Wilted Let-i tuce” and here’s a good | Pennsylvania Dutch recipe i —easy to fix. Dice two! slices of bacon and fry un-1 til not quite crisp. Add 2 ’ tablespoons sugar and 21 tablespoons vinegar and stir until sugar is melted. Add a dash of salt and 1 raw egg. Stir rapidly un til egg curdles (looks aw ful, but tastes sublime). Remove from fire, add young lettuce, toss quickly until slightly wilted. Serve hot—delicious! A FEW HINTS Bananas will keep well if stored in a foil bag. Rub a bit of furniture [ polish over the address of a package you are mailing. This will keep it legible under any weather condi tions. One cup of household! amonia, plus two cups of water makes a good up holstery cleaner.
