DR. M. W. NESBITT Duke Position To Dr. Nesbitt CHARLOTTE —T h e ap pointment of Dr. M. Wil son Nesbitt of Durham as director of Rural Church Affairs and secretary of the Rural Church Committee of The Duke Endowment is announced by Thomas L. Perkins, chairman of the trustees of the endowment. The addition of Dr. Nes bitt as a full-time staff member is a major step in reorganizing operation of the rural church program to bring the two confer ences of the United Metho dist Church in North Caro lina and their bishops into closer contact with the program, Perkins said. Dr. Nesbitt will represent the trustees in dealing with the conferences, with the Div inity School at Duke Uni versity. with the Bishops' Advisory Committee on the Rural Church, and with other agencies concerned with rural churches. His headquarters will be in the Durham office of The Duke Endowment. For the last 10 years Dr. Nesbitt has been associate professor of the work of the rural church at the Divinity School and direc tor of rural church work under the endowment. Ru ral Methodist churches in North Carolina are one of the four major beneficiaries of the endowment. It pro vides funds for building, operation and maintenance of such churches, and to help in the support of Methodist ministers retired from one of the conferences who died while serving one of them. Dean R. E. Cushman of the Divinity School ex pressed regret at Dr. Nes bitt’s separation from im mediate relationship with the faculty and adminlstra. tive program but said he tecognizes the larger con tribution which his experi ence and understanding will be able to bring to the plans of the rural church program of the endowment. IMPORTED CANADIAN WHISKY H ■ ■:'|4 I B;.| w \ ■:* \\ itrJS 1 4 A BUND _ I v .’'•—..TTi,-' I \ IUNW 1 I n “* - LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor: Character assassination by inference was attempted upon three members of the Edenton - Chowan school board at the last meeting of said board by one of its own members. That mem ber has had a long stand ing reputation for being outspoken and vociferous, first on one side of an issue and then the other. And because he raised false hopes among the die-hards, he knows that he will al ways be quoted in The Chowan Herald. It is one thing to be lieve in something. It is quite another to advocate the violation of one’s oath of office in order to satisfy one’s prejudices or gain popularity or further one’s own business interests. Regardless of how we feel about it personally, the law says that segregation is illegal. It also says that dual school systems must be eliminated by 1969-70. We have been given a one year extension due tp our projected building program. Also the Supreme Court has recently ruled that “Freedom of Choice is not im end in itself. If it fails to undo segregation, other means must be used to achieve this end.” Certainly, all of the srhool board members have a copy of this ruling. If the editor does not have a copy, I will be glad to fee that he gets one. As for ESEA funds, I am sure that everyone is aware that whether we ac co p t or reject federal money, we are still re- 1 sponsible for upholding the law. It should be equally as obvious to any respon sible newspaper reporter that nny student who is entitled to professional treatment paid for by ESEA funds has a choice of practitioners. Parents of such children must sign a statement indicating their choice of professional services. These forms are a matter of record for any one to see. Also please be informed that dur ; fees -for ESEA students are an average of $lO to sl2 less than for our regular patients. Please, let us all get to gether and work toward that all-important goal of providing the very best educational opportunities for all the students of Cho wan County. DR. A. F.
