PAGE FOUR-C Capt. C. B. Jennings Appointed Supt. Os USS North Carolina : WILMINGTON—The USS North Carolina Battleship Commission has approved retirement of RADM. Rob ert B. Ellis and appointed Capt. C. B. Jennings, USN (Ret.) to succeed him as superintendent of the fa mous vessel. Capt. Jennings has serv ed as assistant superinten dent of the battleship since 1965. Commission Chairman E. L. Rankin, Jr., of Raleigh announced last month that Admiral Ellis would leave his position at the May 30 commission meeting. The admiral requested the ac tion for personal reasons. He had been superintend ent of the ship since 1962. In approving the retire ment of Admiral Ellis, the commission lauded him for his six years of service to the ship. Rankin cited his “outstanding record in maintaining and operating the ship.” Captain Jennings joined the staff of the battleship after his retirement from a distinguished 34-year ca reer in the U. S. Navy. Born in Culpeper, Va., he was graduated from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1935. He immediately be gan a series of assign ments that kept him in the Pacific throughout World War 11. During 1944-45, as com manding officer of the de stroyer USS McDermut, Capt. Jennings was award ed the Navy Cross, the Bronze Star Medal with Gold Stars each with Com bat “V” and the letter of Commendation with au thority to wear the Com mendation Ribbon. In March, 1954, he be came Commander Escort Squadron 14 and in July, 1955, he reported as chief o( staff and aide to Com mander Naval Base, Key West, Fla. He commanded the USS Monrovia from April, 1957, to April, 1958, and the next month joined the staff of Commander Amphibious Group Four to serve as operations officer until October, 1958, then as chief of staff and aide.
