PAGE TWO-B BROAD STREET I BULLETIN —by KATE In just a few weeks we can take our pick From those three politicians, George Herbert and Dick; But how can we tell in our state of confusion Which one to vote for, they’re all quite amusin’. After listening to poli tical speeches for many months, then in listening to pros and cons from the sideliners, 1 have come to the conclusion that we should place them as Presi dent, First Vice President and Second Vice President —they all seem to be pro mising the same things. I just read a short re view on a new book by Richard Garvin and Rob ert Burger, titled “Where They Go To Die"—an ex pose on many nursing (homes in America. The authors, calling them “Half way Houses to the Ceme tery," give a black picture to a future of many aged people. It certainly is not an easy choice to make, anytime for anyone. In spite of Hurricane Gladys, the fish fry held by the local Eastern Stars Saturday was quite a suc cess. With the assistance of a number of Masonic members who didn't mind getting rain-soaked a few times, these Eastern Stars proved to be the staunch est workers they’ve always been noted for. If you missed getting a fish plate, you sure missed a good dinner. It's apple time again and there seems to be a bounti ful harvest of them this year. They’re such a ver satile' fruit and so very good for you—can be eaten for breakfast, dinner and supper. One of the nicest memories I have is being able to go down the cellar in the fall of the year and that wonderful aroma of upples hit one on the first cellar step. At our 'house we try to keep applap on. hand all the time. \ I was so very sorry to hear about the death of Mr Byrum of the Quinn Furniture Company. It was hard to go in the stare this week and not find him there. I just received several recipes from the Pennsyl vania Dutch country, sent to me by Buffs niece, Mrs. Charlotte Mitzel. Here’s one for Snickerd oodles— hope you like it: Preheat oven to 350 de grees. Mix thoroughly 1 cup Crisco, lVi cups sugar and 2 eggs. Sift together 2% cups flour, 2 tsp. cream of tartar, 1 tsp. soda and >4 tsp. salt and add to first mixture. Chill dough, roll into balls the size of wal nuts, then roll in mixture of 2 tbsp. sugar and 2 tsp. cinnamon. Place 2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake 8 to 10 min utes in oven until brown. About the recent wed ding of Jackie and Onassis. Heard someone down town| compare it to the Beauty and the Beast. Next Tuesday, October 29, at 4 P. M. the Metho dist women will hold a worship service, observing Call to Prayer and Self- Denial in their annual Week of Prayer. This worship service will be held at the Edenton Metho dist Church and the theme will be “Christ the Giver of Life." Be sure to read “Shop ping With You” in this week’s issue of The Herald.
