SECTION C Around Chowan County Farms By C. W. OVERMAN Vegetable Insect Control: Growers are calling for in sect control on watermel ons and cantaloupes. Cut worms and flea beetles are the principal problems thus far. Cucumber beetles work on these same crops doing much damage before detec tion. For contrtol of cutworms 14G Diazinon is good. The granular Diazinon Should be applied as a six to eight in band prior to or at planting. Be careful to not concentrate the ma terial in the seed. One grqwer’s equipment was set for close side-placement. One of the tubes became unadjusted, putting the chemical in the seed area While the other of the two row equipment operated properly. A poor stand re sulted in the first row ne cessitating replanting. This spreaded a six inch band so very little of the material actually fell in with the seed. There was no stand injury in this case. After the melon plants are up Diazinon granular may be applied in a band over the plants just ahead of light cultivation. Plants must be dry so the chem ical doe 9 not stick to the leaves. Do not concentrate material over the plant area but use a spreader tip making about a six inch band. Flea beetles, cucumber beetles and most foliar feeding insects may be controlled with Lindane. Spraying may be more ef fective than dusting but both are effective. Read the label and follow the instructions. Remember, you are not broadcasting but spraying over a small Edenton, North Carolina, Thursday, May 1, 1969 plant area so apply ac cordingly. Peanut Planting: As I write this on Tuesday morning it is raining. This will delay us a few days. Remember, this week and next week is our main peanut planting time. Cotton Planting: Cotton planting time is here, pre ferably next week. Prac tifcally all cottoji seed now are acid delinted (black seed). A good stand of plants is necessary for highest yield. If the seed germination is 90 per cent or higher, plant about 15 to 16 pounds per acre. This should be an average of six to eight seed per foot of row. If the seed germina tion is under 90 per cent, increase the seeding rate accordingly. Plant seed about a half inch deep. Granular Di-Sysrton ap plied at planting will con trol sucking insects as mites, thrips and aphids for 60 to 90 days. Use a spreader between the planter boot and coverers or set the application tube a little to one side so that most of the chemical does not fall directly on the seed. Too much chemical in direct contact with the seed may cause injury. Apply the recommended herbicide of your choice for weed and grass con trol. Read and follow label instructions. Some say the world is getting better, and others maintain that every day we are becoming worse and worse. Can both be right—or both be wrong? What ever shape the world is in, it was put there by people. What kind of a shape is your world in? Whether you like it or not, you are in a world aU your own. And that world of yours is either beautiful or ugly. Whichever it is—it was cre ated by you. Someone has said: “If the people who ana lyse the world’s condition look beyond them selves—they just might find a different picture.” If you find a person with a bright and happy outlook, what a wonderful world they must see. RE-ELECT Luther C. Parks Councilman Fourth Ward TOWN OF EDENTON Tuesday, May 6th Your Vote and Support Will Be Greatly Appreciated! For the past five years I have tried to make every citizen in Edenton aware of their local government, and to take part in each election. I am very proud to say that this has been done. We have 15 people seeking office this time. I think this is a very healthy sign. In the past five years I have attend ed the council meetings and kept up with all actions of our local government, and in turn, passed most of this information on to interested citizens. From this, more people have become better inform ed of local issues, and this is the way it should be. I won’t say I’ll solve all our problems, but I will say I’ll start ... I won’t say I have all the answers, but the ones I don’t have, we will find by working together. I am looking forward to working with each and every citizen in the next two years. I ask that on May 6th you go to the polls and cast your vote for me. -VOTE ROY HARRELL FOR MAYOR (PaM for by Roy Harrell Committee far Mayor) SECTION C WATERCOLOR DISPLAY The watercolor class of ’ Mrs. Jacqueline Jenkins will have an art show from' 2 P.
