Around Chowan Farms By C. W. OVERMAN Hog CboUxa Situation Carious: On Monday of this week, so far as I know, there la no hog cholera oyt break in Chowan County, but I am informed that ■*there an cases in adjoin ing Gates County. All swine producers are urged to take every step pos sible to reduce chances of contamination on their premises. The following steps should help consider ably: Cut down on traffic. Don't let anyone walk or drive to or from your farm without thoroughly disin fecting shoes, boots and ve hicle tires. Seed dealer trucks may carry disease from farm to farm if this precaution is not followed. On your own farm, if you have more than one lot of hogs, disinfect your shoes before going from one group to another. If you go to a livestock market, change clothes and disin fect Shoes thoroughly, also automobile or truck tires, before going back to care for your own hogs. An emergent law by the Commissioner of Agricul ture states that no feeder pigs or breeders may be moved from one farm to another except under writ ten permission. Observe this. Don't feed garbage to hogs unless the garbage is thoroughly cooked. WEEKEND SPECIAL (ANNINS PEACHES $3.00 per bu. Don't borrow a boar and don’t- lend your boar to anyone else. Be sure to report any sick hogs promptly. The state and federal indem nity program will help you if you have hog cholera. They wont pay for pigs that die before they see them. However, the sooner reported, the more loss will be reduced. This is a very serious thing for swine producers to consider at this time. Hog cholera is present and can very easily get a start in Chowan County unless people use extreme care. Let’s work together and keep cholera out of Cho wan County and out of our area. 4-H Club Congress i Ex tension Agents Mrs. Fran ces Ward and Harry Vent ers are accompanying a group of nine Chowan County 4-H Club members in attendance of the 1969 4-H Club Congress being held at N.
