PAGE TWO -A BROAD STREET '<zf BULLETIN... . j By Kate If you really think you ought to diet, : And don’t quite have the pluck to try it, Just go on a shopping spree for clothes, You’ll go back home with the “bulgy” woes. To think of the clothes that you can’t wear Is punishment far too great to bear. ' So go on a diet and try to remember New fashions you’ll be wearing come this September. By this you’ll know that I’ve been shopping but, oh, me, what a shock it is to find that it takes a larger size than it did even last spring. Now I can’t de cide which is more import ant right now—corn on the - cob or a size 14. I was delighted to be in troduced this week to the Lloyd Burton family from Houston, Texas, who are visiting Mrs. Julia Burton and Miss Aurelia Layden. They are indeed a fine • looking family, happy to be visiting here and seeing their former friends. Seems as though most - people who visit in Eden ton like to try their fish ing luck, as it was this week when Kathleen Ross’s sister and grandchildren who are spending several days here. This morning I saw ali »'I them on their way with excitement in their eyes and fishing poles in their hands. The Hector Luptons’ grandsons from San Diego, Cal., who are visiting their grandparents, also went a fishing. Sure hope they all had better luck than the Bufflaps the last few fishing trips. Corrine Thorud has come up with -a novel idea. She votes that we have a Na tional Returning Day, when everyone either comes to collect dishes, borrowed . books, etc., or that every one tries to remember to return all such items beg ged, borrowed or stolen. Alas they’ve gone, pet and parcel and everywhere AD DRESSED UP AND MO PLACETS THROW by HENRYGIBSON I was all dressed up in my new blue suit And I’d revved up Daddy’s car on my first big date. Then I felt a tug at my elbow And knew that my darlin’ had finished her fudgicle. I went to toss her stick out the limousine window When suddenly I noticed her staring in horror! Then I remembered my litter-bag, Dropped in the stick and started to smile. We had not cluttered up the landscape. We had just kept America Beautiful! A Keep America Clean. How ever, when we returned from the airport Sunday, my son Martin had remov ed all traces of toys such as swimming pool, sand buckets, balls, etc. That sweet little girl’s chatter will be echoed around here for many days to come, but after I saw her reunion with her mother, it eased my pain a little, because then—Grandma came sec ond. As for the pooch, Buff feels like his shadow has left him. A friend of mine, Rena Moore, of Shiloh visited us Tuesday afternoon, especi ally to see Grandma Zim merman, whom she has also known for many years. She told me of this recipe, which seems quite simple and fast to make and she says it is delicious: 1 small can mandarin oranges. Vz medium size jar or orange marmalade. 3 tablespoons sour cream. Chill sherbert dishes and line with orange slices. Melt marmalade until sy rupy, cool and pour over oranges. Then add 1 table spoon each sour cream to each serving. Chill again before serving. Makes three desserts. A Few Hints When serving ice cream, chill the dishes first in freezing compartment and cream will not melt nearly as fast. Peas, carrots and corn or beans get a flavor boost if a little light corn syrup is added during cooking. THE CHOWAN HERALD. EDENTON, NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY AUGUST 21, 1961.
