PAGE TWO-A f BROAD STREET BULLETIN... By Kate Happy birthday, little girl, And please, Lord, let her stay As happy through the coming year As perfect as she is today. ' She’ll be four next week, just four years and some times all of us expect a little one who has just been here four years to behave like an adult and to understand the way we do. How can we expect such, when - at. fifty or more we still don’t know how to behave? I was sorry to bear of Mrs. R. P. Badham’s death. I did not know her very well, but I admired her cheerfulness and she al ways seemed to be happy. Even on the hottest days at summer, one could see her always with her pretty hats and white gloves —a lady to be remembered. We spent Friday night at Rocky Mount as a guest of my son Martin and where we attended with him a meeting of the Full Gospel group. We heard an in spiring message by a well known lay leader from New Jersey, who, in himself was a great example of living today for Christ. Don’t be surprised if you hear that the Bufflaps are through with the fishing business. We went to the beach again this weekend and came home with fish, yes—some of the shrimp we took along for bait Creek fishing is off, too, they always bit the day before. Well—we do enjoy the boat rides in the sun Job Corps Aids Youth Joe, dressed neatly in a blue shirt and dark pants, spoke softly about his fam ily, his ambitions and his reasons for dropping out of school. Across the desk from him sat Mrs. Hazel Tayloe, listening intently to the youth’s words. Occasional ly she would stop the youth, probe the qquestion at hand, and take some notes. Joe was applying for Job Corps training, and Mrs. Tayloe was helping to re cruit him. Her title is Job Corps Counselor, and she works for the State Depart ment of Social Services. Joe is a typical case that Mrs. Tayloe and the 10 other Job Corps Counselors that cover the state come in contract with daily. He is only one of the approxi mately 40 per cent of stu dents that drop out of North Carolina’s public schools yearly. During the fiscal year ending June 30, 2,511 North Carolina male youths be tween 16 and 21 years of age applied for enrollment in Job Corps. The regional office accepted 2,433 appli cants and 1,724 enrollees departed for a Job Carps Center. According to fig ures obtained from the na tional office of Job Corps, North Carolina maintained the national enrollment rate. Reports from the State Department of Social Ser : vices show three male youths from Chowan Coun •ty were enrolled in Job : Corps Centers as of July 1. i During the past 46 months ; 28 male youths from this ; county reported to Job Corps Centers. Os that ' number 10 resigned before 90 days, 11 after 90 days but did not graduate and four graduated. Mrs. Tayloe assists appli cants in filling out their application and administers a verbal matching test and : a short written test to de termine whether the appli cant would go to a con : servation camp or an urb i an camp. !
