the fanner’s income every
year. They cost North Ca
rolina fanners, home gard
eners and landowners an
estimated SB3 million in
1965.
Despite the resistant va
rieties, chemicals and va
rious other means of pre
vention that are available,
diseases remain one of the
most serious threats to a
fanner’s crops and trees.
Prevention is the safest
measure against disease,
but diagnosis and treat
ment can also save crops
and profits. The diagnosis
is often the most difficult
step.
One of the most import
ant means we have for
helping make accurate di
agnosis of plant ailments is
the Plant Disease Clinic at
North Carolina State Uni
versity. The clinic is de
signed specifically to re
ceive infected plants and
to provide facilities for
their examination by high
ly trained pathologists who
make quick and accurate
diagnosis for the Extension
agent and farmer.

Nickels program helps pro
vide an adequate staff to
handle the many plants
and requests for help Ex
tension agents and others
send to the clinic.
Nickels for Know-How
began in 1951. Farmers
voted to pay five cents ex
tra for each ton of fertil
izer and feed they buy to
support the research pro
grams which benefit virt
ually every farm family in
the state.
The Nickels money thaf
goes to the support of the
Plant Disease Clinic is one
example of these returned
'benefits.
On November 25 farm
families and other users of
feed and fertilizer will vote
on the continuation of the
Nickels program for six
more years.
A Rudder For Soils: You
wouldn’t dare go out in a
boat without a rudder or a
car without a steering
wheel to steer it. Yet in
many fields crops are
planted each year without
the use of a soil test as a
guide steering the use of
lime and fertilizer.
Now is the time to take
soil samples and send them
in for soil analysis for
crops next year. Soil samp
ling materials are available
at your county Extension
office and at your fertil
izer dealers.
Free transportation for
soil samples is being pro
vided again. The pick-up
dates are November 20, De
cember 18 and January 20.
Soil samples may be taken
to the county Extension of
fice or to your fertilizer
dealer.

be formed bringing the
state’s total number of
counties to 100.
