Fourteen Complete Class For Nurse Assistants course, sponsored by th o Adult Division of the College of the Albemarle, was suc cessfully completed by 14 adults primarily of the Eden ton-Chowan area. Mrs. Dorothy Pavlich, RN, instructor, taught the basic as well as some of the more ad vanced techniques of bedside nursing. With the completion of this class, 54 Chowan area adults have been awarded nurse as Elmore Is Cited By Belk Tyler Alton G. Elmore, manager of the local Belk Tyler Store since February, 1962, was presented a 20-year service pin by L. A. Bailey, execu tive vice president of the Belk Tyler Stores, in Rocky Mount last week. In making the presentation, Bailey commended Elmore for his years with the company, which began as a high school extra before becoming a full i time employee on June 1, 1950 in The Rocky Mount store. During the 20 years with Belk Tyler, taking time out sistant certificates. This al lows Chowan Hospital to em ploy only those people having nurse assistant certificates for this area of nursing. Present ly, 22 of the 54 graduates are employed at the hospital. Anticipating future needs of qualified employees of the nurse assistant category, the hospital will be offering an other course of this type in rpproximately a year’s time. from November, 1952, to No vember, 1954, to serve in the U. S. Army, Elmore worked in the Rocky Mount store in various capacities, including advertising and public rela tions director. He came to Edenton as manager in February, 1962, when the former manager of the local store, J. R. DuLaney, •resigned to enter private re tail business. Being courteous may re quire a little extra time but, in the long run, it often saves time. Immanuel Plans Events Sunday will be a special day at Immanuel Baptist Church. The church members will celebrate both homecom ing and the anniversary of their first year in the new building ' located on West Queen Street, at Westover Heights. Rev. Russell W. Rice, pas tor, said Sunday School will begin at 10 A. M., with wor ship services to follow at 11 A. M. After the morning services a picnic lunch will be served. The special homecoming events continue at 2:30 o’clock with services featuring Rev. and Mrs. Bill Bernstein. They will present a program of special music as well as a afpiv, j 4~4- « Calico Scallops Many people are glad to see the calico scallop being harvested in commercial quantities again. Os course, no one knows how long this will last. Since 1959, we have experienced four cycles of production peaks. Even with the present situation we just don’t know all we should know about our resource. While our present supply boats are busily harvesting scallops, shucking houses are operating and a considerable number of people are work ing. But, we are still having problems with the quality of meats going to market and the image the scallop indus try creates locally. First, let us re-state some suggestions on handling scal lops. These are: 1. Least time possible be tween harvest and shucking. 2. Keep temperature down. 3. Do not keep large piles of scallops on shucking table. 4. Each morning the school will be gin at 9:30 o’clock and con tinue unti 11:30 o’clock. The program conducted by “Pastor Bill” includes mis sionary stories, Bible stories, gospel magic, songs and Bible memorization. Assisting him daily will be his wife, Aileen. Secondly, the sanitation within and without the shuck ing houses has become very lax. We should try to clean up inside to have a better product, that is of high quali ty, low in bacteria count, and pleasing to the consumer.
