1 Report From Washington By Rep. Walter B. Jones . Last week the Congress did not 'meet due to the election recess; therefore, there is no legislative action to report, i As previously reported, Congress will reconvene on /November 16 for what many term a “lame duck” session. There is still much legislation to be considered, but the only legislation which must be acted upon in order .for the government to continue its normal operations, are the va. rkms appropriation bills. The House has already vot ed on all necessary appropria tion ■ bills; but is still faced with reconsideration of the Independent Offices and the 'Department of Housing and Urban (Development appropri ation, inasmuch as this is one of the bills vetoed by the President a few weeks ago. Also each year, Congress votes to approve a “Supple mental Appropriation” which corrects - deficiencies and makes other changes in ap propriations previously ap proved. v. The Senate, on the other piand, has much work to do for they have yet to consider the appropriations for the FREE Thermal Blanket WITH PURCHASE OF A PHEW imsm ot hkd SPACE HEATER j MEANS WARM AIR EVERYWHERE... All of theso to some degree are con troversial, and I predict that the Congress will be in ses sion into the month c.f De cember. In addition to the appropri ations, the Senate also is still considering President Nixon’s so-called “Welfare Reform Bill,” or guaranteed income proposal. It now appears that the Senate will not approve this bill during this session of Congress. Aside from the appropria tion bills, there are other im->, portant bills still to be con sidered, such as legislation to impose restrictions on the importation of textiles and other commodities, which has not been considered by eith er the House or the Senate, nor has the Senate given final approval to the new farm bill. Also, the Senate has not taken any action on the house-approved social se curity bill which provides for a five per cent increase in payments to become effec THE CHOWAN HERALD, EDENTON, NORTH CAROLINA, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 29, 1979. tive January 1971.
