He was greedy and had a sly nature. Ham let could see through Clau dius, but Gertrude, Hamlet’s •mother, married him, making Claudius Hamlet’s stepfather. If this production has a fault, I believe it is that of the character portraying Hamlet. He looked to be older than the woman por traying Hamlet’s mother. However, this does not ruin the significance of the film. It still proved to be very educational and of interest to the students who attended. Research shows that the person who has consumed two cocktails or two beers is twice as likely to Become in volved in a highway crash as the person who is not drink ing. But critical questions remain un- • answered. A letter by Dr. Petteway in The Chowan Herald of De cember 10, 1970, states, “No savings could be effected by combining the two schools, neither through physical fa cilities nor administration.” Now that is simply incred ible! Even The Daily Advance could not swallow that. In its editorial “No Merger of Colleges” (December 11, 1970), TDA concedes that, ‘There is natural duplication in having two schools which •might be combined for finan cial efficiency." TDA furth er states that “there will be many instances in which uni fication, especially when it involves taxes spent, will be encouraged by this news paper.” But no examples are given in the field of education. Now obviously federal grants and other, monies also involved in COA's funding drive come from our taxes. What then arc TDA’s criteria for favoring financial frug ality in “many instances” fi. o. other cities with com munity colleges plus institu tions cf higher education—?) but apparently not in Eliza beth City? How much financial ineffi ciency is TDIA prepared to de fend in its own backyard? If financial inefficiency docs not mandate 'merger, then what does? Consider another line of thought. Assume the finan cial gains from merger to be relatively small. Recall another observation from Dr. Petteway: “EOSU is already burgeon ing out of its campus and looking for room to expand. COA can profitably use 190 acres or more of campus within the next decade.” LONG TERM LOANS TO FARMERS 102 W. Eden St., Edenton , N. C. Each Thursday from 10 A. M., to 12 Noon Phone 482-4904 Why not plan for the si multaneous expansion of both schools and thereby capitalize on the savings possible as each remains distinct? One problem is that we have two governing boards rather than one. The State Board cf Higher Education controls EOSU while the State Board of Education governs COA. But who holds both boards accountable for the fullest exploration of merger possibilities in par ticular cities or for simul taneous expansions? The issues involved in the proposed complex for COA have implications far beyond the Albemarle. Much more thought must be given all possibilities, for it is our fu ture together that we are discussing.
