directors of instruction,
principals, superintendents,
and any other member of
NCAE with special interest
on student curriculum.
Present North Carolina
membership is
approximately 785.
Although ASCD deals with
some member welfare
topics, the organization’s
main stress is
curriculum study. Each
year the ASCD sponsors a
major curriculum project,
often staff development
experiences for interested
members.
As vice president and
president-elect, Lassiter
will preside over the 1977
Annual Study Conference.
Because nationally known
consultants are desired to
appear on the program for
the study conference,
Lassiter is already planning
for the event.
As an ASCD member,
Lassiter served on the board
of directors from 1973-75,
was treasurer in 73-74 and
treasurer in 74-75. This year
he is one of three ASCD
members who will act as a
representative to the
NCAE’s administrator’s
caucus.

groom will re-enroll at East
Carolina University in the
fall, majoring in business
administration. Currently
he is engaged in farming in
Pinetown, where the couple,
will live.
Mrs. Jim P. Partin served
as mistress of ceremony.
The bridal party and out
of-town guests were
entertained at an after
rehearsal party on March 5
by the bride’s parents in the
home of Mr. and Mrs.
Bateman, Sr.
On February 27, a floating
miscellaneous shower was
given in the home of Mrs. E.
N. Manning, in Edenton.
Hostesses for the shower
were Mrs. Manning, Mrs.
Thurrell Bunch, Miss Bonita
Perry, and Mrs. Haywood
M. Phthisic, 111.
Tax Refunds
Are Larger
GREENSBORO The
average Federal tax refund
to North Carolinians this
year indicates an increase
of about 14 per cent over last
year at this time.
However, the volume of
individual returns received
through February 22 reveals
more than 80,000 fewer
returns had been filed. For
the 688,540 returns received,
almost 240,000 have been
processed for refunds
totalling more than SB4-
million, an average of $350.
The bulk of returns filed
are on the “short form”,
1040A, IRS says. Congress
increased the standard
deduction for the 1975 tax
year, enabling more
taxpayers to use the short
form, rather than the long
form and itemizing
deductions.

THE CHOWAN HERALD
The Bandon Notebook
By Louise D. Waters
If the saying the month of
March comes in like a lamb
it will go out like a lion is
true, then we are sure in for
some different weather than
what we have been having.
The beautiful Spring flowers
and trees blooming really
makes a person want to stay
outside and enjoy the beauty
of our country.
The Sunday School lesson *
was taught by “Butch”
Smith with the topic being
‘“Jesus Demonstrates Total
Commitment.” Scripture
was verses from Matthew
Chapter 19 and 20. He
brought the subject out very
clearly and asked: What are
our commitments to God? It
involves much more than a
ritual act of Sunday
worship. Mrs. Garris Perry
(Betty) teacher in
children’s department, had
as her topic “Pledging Our
Allegiance” with scripture
taken from I Kings Chapter
18. Betty had 16 chilreninher

morning, they are about to
out number the Adults “a
little child shall lead them”.
Tom Dilday Sunday School

everyone. The prayer list
for the sick included
Torrence Barden, Juanita
Elliott, and Annie Cooke. We

evil can only do good unless
you belong to Christ.
