Tick Fever Can Be Diagnosed Early RALEIGH—Rocky Moun tain Spotted Fever (RMSF), a potentially deadly disease contracted from the bite of ticks, can now be diagnosed by the state laboratory within 48 hours, according to Stewart Vick, head of the agency’s virology branch. Now, provided the laboratory receives a live tick, a positive diagnosis can be made and treatment started long before the end of the incubation period. Vick, who started doing the test in 1975, said the big problem is getting a live tick. He made it clear that in order to perform the test, a live tick is necessary. The virologist said the tick should be taken from the person on whom it is attached very carefully (only ticks attached to humans are accepted). He suggested the tick be swabbed gently with alcohol. This, he expalined, encourages the critter to release. Then grasp with tweezers and pull out without jerking or tisting. The idea is not to break any parts of the tick. To transport, Vick recommends that a moistened particle of paper towel be placed in a small necked glass or plastic bottle or tube. Stopper the container with cotton. Plug firmly enough to prevent the tick from escaping around the cotton. If the result for the test is positive, the sender will be notified by telephone. Vick emphasized the state laboratory is not equipped to do tick surveys. He did state, however, that many more than the 40 tests per week now being performed, are within the facility’s capabilities. THE CHOWAN HERALD ExtMsioii Urges All Cotton Fields To Be Mapped By R. M. Thompson County Extension Chairman As of today EPA has not approved the material that we are planning to use on cotton, but we feel pretty sure that it will be approved before the time comes to start applying it. At the present time, we have spotted all the cotton that we know about on the county maps, but there is always a possibility that we have missed some. We would like very much for you to notify us if you know of some small fields of cotton or if you have not been contacted about your own cotton so that we can be sure that all the cotton in Chowan County is located and placed on the maps. There are a lot of fields with boll weevil traps already set and someone will be riding by to check these traps regularly. Please notify us of other cotton fields. We will be in touch with you at a later date with the possibility of having meeting where we can all discuss this program together. In a few days most of the soybeans that were planted the middle of May will be 6 to 8 inches high and this is one of the best times to spray soybeans to control cockleburs and morning glories. To effectively kill morning glories and cockleburs they should be in the two-leaf stage or less. The materials we are recommending are Basagran - 2 to 3 qts. broadcast; Dynap - 2 qt. braoadcast; or Preemerge - 2 qt. broadcast. On Preemage or Dynap there is a special method that should be followed in applying this material. You should use 60 lbs. pressure and 10 gallons of water to the acre. This is most important, not only to prevent damage to the soybeans but to kill the weeds and morning glories. The boom of the sprayer should be at least a foot to two feet above the soybeans and the nozzle tips should be of the small type such as the 80015. We would suggest that you follow the label in Basagran, or the other materials. Many ofyou have had experience in the past with Basagran and you know it does an excellent job on cockleburs. If you have any questions on these materials, please contact us at the County Exten sion Office.
