Four Complete Individualized Studies
College of The
Albemarle’s Individualized
Instruction Center in
Edenton is spotlighting four
adults who have completed
their high school education.
Two students, Diane
Lassiter and Susan
Stallings, have completed
the Adult High School
Diploma Program, and will
be awarded diplomas from
the Edenton-Chowan Board
of Education this month.
The other two students,
Cathryn Brown and Martin
Parker, have completed the
General Educational
Development Program, and
will receive their high
school equivalency
certificates from the State
Board of Education.
Daine Lassiter completed
her education while engaged
in the Manpower Program.
During this time, she
worked part-time at a non
profit organization, the
Economic Improvement
Council, and studied eight
hours each week at the IIC.
She was paid for both her
part-time work and her
study at the center. This
enabled her not only to earn
her high school diploma, but
to gain valuable work
experience as well.
Susan Stallings enrolled at
the center last August, and
finished her remaining high
school requirements by the
end of April. This was
accomplished in spite of the
fact that she was able to
attend only a few hours each
week.
Cathryn Brown, originally
from Kentucky, moved to
Edenton last summer and
enrolled at the IIC shortly
thereafter. It did not take
her long to complete all five
GED tests to qualify her as a
high school graduate in
April. She recently
succeeded in obtaining the
position of manager of
Chowan Court Apartments.
Martin Parker studied
alternately at the IIC since
1969. He initially began with
the AHD program. When the
lack of time became a
deciding factor, he
converted to th GED
program, and was able to
complete his five tests in
three days’ time.
Each adult who attends
the IIC has different
backgrounds and different
needs, according to Mrs.
Mary Partin, coordinator
for the local unit. Once an
adult makes the decision to
attend the center, he must
visit .the center, which is

Once scored, the tests are
