some 70,018 students are
expected to graduate this
year, although the exact
number of 1976 graduates
cannot be determined until

72,000 during the next four
years. In 1980, however, the
number of graduates is
expected to begin a gradual
decline, decreasing to 62,494
students by 1985.
The trend over the past 10
years in North Carolin’s
public schools has been
toward fewer and larger
high schools. In 1966, for
example, there were 663
high schools reporting
graduates as compared with
only 365 high schools in 1975.
