Page 2-A Volentiae Attends Conference Zach Valentine of Edenton, Who completes in football at East Carolina University is attending a Fellowship of Christian Athletes conference June 13-19 at Black Mountain. The five-day program of “inspiration and perspiration” is one of 27 FCA National Conferences scheduled this summer involving 10,000 high school, college and pro athletes and coaches and family Zach Valentine Throo Students From Chowan Attend Institnte CHAPEL HILL-Three Chowan County high school students and their advisor are attending the N. C. Scholastic Institute this week at the University of North Carolina here. Susan Rebecca Bass, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Murray S. Bass, Route 1, Edenton; Vickie Lynn Modlin, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Modlin, Route 1. Tyner; and Barry Allen Byrum, son of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll By rum. Route 1, Edenton, are among those attending. They are all juniors at Chowan High School and on the staff of the Chowanian. Their advisor is Mrs. Ethelene Rascoe. The are among 325 students representing 62 high schools attending the 35th annual institute co sponsored by the UNC School of Journalism, N. C. Press Association, N. C. Triangle Professional Chapter of Women in Communications, Inc., and the UNC Extension Division. Rachel Holmes Receives Award At Gradeatioa Miss Rachel Brugh Holmes of Asheboro, received the School of Nursing Alumni Award in special graduation exercises recently at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Dr. Laurel A. Copp, dean of the School of Nursing, made the presentation. The award is made annually to a senior with academic excellence who has demonstrated outstanding participation in activities of the School of Nursing, the university, and health related fields. As a member of the class at the 187th commencement exercises, Miss Holmes received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree. While at the university she was a James M. Johnston Scholar and a member of the Alpha Alpha Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, the national nursing honor society. She is also a graduate of Saint Mary’s College in Raleigh. In June she will join the staff at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, as a pediatric staff nurse. Miss Holmes is the daughter of the Rev. and Mrs. George B. In addition to "Huddle” group discussions, the daily schedule consists of competition in a variety of sports, special events, workouts, coaches clinics, and evening assemblies where top sports figures share their Christian faith. Among the 21-year-old organization's v more prominent proponents and conference staff participants are Tom Osborne,- Jim Kaat, Don Kessinger, Roger Staubach, Tim Foley, Tom Landry, Madeline Manning Jackson, Archie Griffin, Paul Anderson and Kyle Rote, Jr. Purpose of the FCA is “to confront athletes and coaches, and through them the youth of the nation, with the challenge and adventure of accepting Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord, participating in His Church and serving Him through our vocations.” The year-round program includes NCAA and NAIA coaches meetings, rallies, weekend conferences, bowl breakfasts, pro chapel services and Bible studies, national banquets, and athletes and coaches meeting in over 1,850 high school Huddles and college Fellowships from coast to coast. 'Corolißo Cargo’ Is Available To Pablic Groups “Carolina Cargo” a 14 minute audio-visual presentation produced by th N. C. State Ports Authority, is available to civic clubs, organizations, schools, and interested groups throughout North Carolina and the United States. The presentation, produced by the Public Relations Department of the authority, relates the complete story of ports development in North Carolina including the ideas and inception of a public ports authority, historical background leading to ports development, and a statistical update on development in terms of numbers of ships, tonnages, and related figures. “Carolina Cargo’s purpose is to communicate more directly the goals and purposes of our state ports as they relate to our economy, define possibilities for future growth, and dramatize the economic impact of port operations on the state of North Carolina. Hie audio-visual makes an excellent program for clubs and organizations. The 14-minute production, which must be introduced and operated by a ports authority representative, is followed by a brief question and answer period and provides an interesting and informative 20-30 minute program, depending on time requirements. Beautiful color slides coordinated with a briskly moving narration by a professional announcer and appropriate background music insure the different publics viewing the presentation an opportunity to understand the importance of this North Carolina organization. The presentation was produced in cooperation with Ernest Knight Public Relations Group, Inc., of Greensboro. FEDERAL TAX RE CEIPTS of $298 billion esti mated for this year represent a contribution of $4,150 from each American household— double the tax take in 1968 and four times that of 1956.
