19,0976, . Two h One >U ■ , By: Mary, Lissle Lane Tbe party was held the sixth day of August. It was in honor of Henrietta and Grace. Yes, it into celebrated very nicely, And it Was held at the' same place. t ■ i The partywas a floater as you may know, It lasted from early until late, Three generations were represented there. We were really entertained, the hostess was great. Yes, lUas just an afternoon guest, When dinper was served, I wasn’t there. But I know the group of Christian people, Uttereda" beautiful birthday prayer. When I arrived I was greeted by Chip, Then I entered the door to my surprise, Talking and laughter filled the room, And five big cakes looked me straight in the eyes. 4 1 The pictures were already taken when I arrived, But Preston still had the Kodak in his hand. He is just a thirteen year old boy, And he can take pictures good as any man. One of my lady friends was there, Her home was in Florida for many a year. Now she’s back home in old Carolina, Living in her trailer home without a fear. We were playing and having fun, Then we heard a gentle knock at the door. It was a guest from the state of New York, Don’t expect we’ll have the opportunity to meet any more. Then soon the telephone began to ring, It was a lady from down South. Sending her birthday greetings by wire, Right over to the party house. \ * Yes, I left before the gifts were opened, I am sure they were beautiful to see. All tied up with bows so pretty and neat, The party really meant a lot to me. (fy GETSET MIfOR SCHOOL! /Ml DRESSES, HreRE PANTSUITS, ttam|! ML E«Won, N. C. AT FIELD DAY—Shown is a portion of the Albemarle Conservation District Supervisors during their Annual Field Day held August 10. The field day consists of a morning business session and a tour in the afternoon. The tour this year was of Camp Coleman, a 4-H Camp in Currituck County. Present at the field day meeting were supervisors, SCS personnel, boys from the five counties who attended the Resource Conservation Workshop in Raleigh, and representative from the State Soil and Water Conservation Commission in Raleigh. Local SCS Applauded State Conservationist Jesse L. Hicks of Raleigh, who heads the Soil Con servation Service in North Carolina, applaudes supervisors of North Carolina’s 92 soil and water conservation districts “for the way they are meeting new challenges, such as urban sedimentation problems and threats to clean water in our streams.” The SCS official pointed out that the supervisors have traditionally served farmers and other rural landowners, and still carry out effective programs of conservation in rural areas. “But in recent years they have been faced with in creased responsibilities, and most have involved urban problems, developing of rural areas, highways and similar projects,” he pointed out. The Albemarle Con servation District, com posed of Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Pasquotank and Perquimans counties is one of the most active districts the storte in carrying out an effective conservation program. They continue to meet new challenges and responsibilities with a sincere desire to get the job done. Normal activities of the Albemarle District include Soil Stewardship Week-- when clergymen are en couraged to preach on values of maintaining soil and water resources for the benefit of the country - conservation tours, selec tion of the Conservation Farm Family of the Year on the county, area and state level, and encouraging landowners to carry out worthwhile conser vation practices. ■ Youth activities are a special interest of Albemarle Conservation District supervisors. THE CHOWAN HERALD Assistance with en vironmental outdoor classrooms at public and private schools, conducting poster contests for fourth, fifth and sixth grade students, land judging contests and Woodland Clinics for FFA members, and North Carolina’s widely recognized Resource Conservation Workshop, carried out each spring at N. C. State University in Raleigh, are typical ac tivities. Hicks also pointed out that conservation district supervisors are leading promoters of minimum tillage and no-till cultivation, a fast-growing practice in North Carolina. The Albemarle District has purchased a set of minimum tillage planters and made them available free to encourage this desirable technique. Wildlife plantings, to provide both food and habitat, is another measure encouraged by the Albemarle District. “Since they serve without salary, this ispublic service of the finest type,” Hicks stated. “And it is a real tribute to their spirit of service that they will take on additional tasks, often involving personal time after hours or taking them away from their regular work. In most circles, ad ditional responsibiility normally carries additional pay. But a supervisor’s pay consists only of the reward for carrying out a program he or she believes in.” “The people of North Carolina are well served by these public spirited volunteers, who can only be taking on their duties because of their love of the soil and our other vital natural resources. I’m glad that I can salute their ac complishments,” Hicks concluded. Jadga Chaffin Presides Over Coart Session Judge John T.
