$2,700. The governmnt
would then match the
paycheck deduction with
twice the amount, with the
total of both contributions
not to exceed $8,300. There is
a provision that calls for the
program to be evaluated
after five years.
The new bill, while it
increases rather generously
the payments to those who
are now under the program,
will result in substantial
savings during the next five
years. Also in the new law,
there are tighter safeguards
that are designed to cut
down abuses. And while the
GI Bill has not been cheated
on to the extent that
Medicaid has, there have
been some abuses.
Under the new law,
schools will have to report in
more detail to the Veterans
Administration. The reports
must include a student’s
attendance record and in
dicate whether he is passing
a course or failing it.
There was little opposition
to this measure in the Senate,
where it was passed by a
voice vote. The feeling there
was that the government
should support veterans who
leave the service and who
