Head Start also, serves
Washington County,
operating a Home Base
Program that serves (30
children and their families)
making a total of 261
children and families served
by Head Start Program.
Head Start also serves 10
per cent of the enrollment
with services to children
with special needs.
The Head Start Program
has many ways to help
families. Seven of the major
efforts through which they
are effective are:
An educational program
for children and their
families.
' A nutritional service
program for children.
A social service program
for children and their
families.
A health program for
children.
A volunteer program for
children.
A parent involvement
program to assist in the
development of skills and
knowledge of parents who
are active in the program.
An opportunity for
parents to play a major role
in determining how the
program should be run to be
in compliance with the
performance standards.
The parents in Chowan
County have decided to have
as a project, a Sewing Class.
Miss Darlene McClease has
volunteered to be instructor
of this class. They are
asking local merchants to
donate material that can be
used in this project. The
parents are planning to
make smocks and other
things for the children to use
in the center. It is hoped this
project will be a success.
On December 10, the Head
Start parents sponsored a
“grocery drawing” at the
Head Start Center. The
parents donated items to
make the grocery bags, and
had enough items donated to
make bags for two winners.
Mrs. Bernice Rascoe of
Edenton and Mrs. Ernestine
THE CHOWAN HERALD
Spruill of Creswell won
three bags of grocery
each.
They raised $266.30 from
this project. The parents
decided to use some of the
money to buy each child a
present for Christmas and to
give the children a
Christmas Party.
Head Start is now taking
applications for next year. If
you have a child who is 4
years old or will be 4 by
October 15,1977, feel free to
fill out an application and
your child might be eligible
for Head Start.

By Jerry LaVoie
On December 7th, die

the Holmes High gym.
The Aces had a handful
with the Eagle?. After four
" matches they trailed 224),
They then roared back for 15
points with Alphonso White
winning 12-3, Haywood Bond
pinning his opponent in 1:51
seconds and David Sutton,
in his first varsity wresting
match for the Aces won by
10 points, closing the gap to

matches with consecutive
pins by Donald Rankins
(1:33), Raymond Brown
(1:02), Mike Brown (1:44),
and John Norris (1:34).
James Jones closed the
scoring with a forfeit.
After Rankins’ pin got the
momentum going, R.
Brown, M. Brown and
Norris overpowered their
opponents to the delight of
the partisan crowd. As the
Aces came storming back,
the crowd, quite large for
the season opener, becme
near hysterical as Norris
took his opponent to the mat,
rolled him around a few
times, and pinned him.
Preceding the match there
were five preliminary
matches. Bernard Hudson,
Clint Williams and Kenneth
Jackson all won their
Gilbert Layton and Mrs.

matches.
The Aces were not so
lucky bo December 10, when
they again returned to the
Holmes High gym for a
match with the Plymouth
Vikings. The match started
much the same way as the
one on Tuesday. After five
matches the Aces trailed 24-
3. Only an Edward Jackson
victory broke the Viking
string. But the next six
matches went to the Aces.
Haywood fiond and David
Sutton started the Aces
comeback with 63 and 10-6
wins, respectively. Then
came consecutive pins by
Kenneth Bond (:57), Donald
Rankins (\:sl 3rd period)
and Robert Brown (1:19 2nd
period).
- After Mike Brown won 9-0
the Aces went ahead 31-24.
And with the “ace” of the
squad, John Norris, to
wrestle next, things looked
good for the Aces. Another
large crowd was on hand
and they were sure the Aces
would win. But Norris was
defeated 4-1 and James
Jones was pinned at the
Aces hopes went down the.
