Page 4-C 500 Attead Gifted; Totaled Coalertore Some 500 teachers of gifted and talented students from all over the state are expected to attend the Fourth Annual Gifted and Talented Conference March 4-5 at the Hyatt House and Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem. GT teachers attending from Edenton-Chowan Schools are Mrs. Betty Bissette at Ernest A. Swain School, and Miss Cathy Segraves, at Chowan High School. Mrs. Bissette, who has directed the GT program at Swain for the past two years, stated that in formation gained from previous convention ex perience has been most beneficial for conducting a GT program. “The ex change of ideas and suc cessfully used materials that really work is one of the best practical parts,” Mrs. Bissette said. “It’s so good to find out that others are doing the same as you and that you are on the right track,” she also added. Carrying out the theme, “The Yellow Brick Road of Alternatives,” the con ference will focus on alternatives for planning and implementing programs for gifted and talented children. Teachers will spend most of the time in workshops covering such topics as parental guidance for the gifted child, alternatives for teaching gifted middle grades students, teaching higher elementary mathematics, and assessing individual needs of gifted students. Workshop leaders will be mainly North Carolinians outstanding in the gifted child education. The out-of-state educators will lead workshops. Dr. Alexinia Baldwin, Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at State University of New York in Albany, will conduct a ..workshop on curriculum alternatives for the gifted and talented. Another noted workshop leader will be Dr. Barbara Aiello, editor of ‘Teaching Exceptional Children,” a publication of the Council for Exceptional Children headquartered in Reston, Virginia. Her workshop will be on diagnostic perscriptive teaching. The conference is being sponsored by the Depart ment of Public Instruction’s Division for Exceptional Children, Parents for the Advancement of Gifted Education (PAGE), and the North Carolina Association of the Gifted and Talented (NCAGT). Letter To The Editor Letter to the Editor: I would like to say a few words on behalf of the Chowan County Red Cross Bloodmobile which is to be here on March 14. We have already had several successful visits this year, meeting and beating the quota everytime, thanks to the good people of our area. Our quota for this visit has been set at 175 pints of blood, this is not set by the Norfolk Red Cross, but by the county representatives. I believe that we as a group have the potential to attain even higher quotas, but this will be the highest ever set in Chowan County. I can’t do it alone and I need everyones help, if you are between 17 and 65 years of age then you are a potential donor, please take time to donate the gift of life, your help is urgently needed and will be greatly appreciated. I also need volunteer RN’s and LPN’s to help some during the day, if you can please call me at 482-8471 day 221-4747 night. The hours will be from 12:00-6:00 P.M. at the Edenton Baptist Church.
