Women Set
Area Meet
The 79th Annual meeting
of the Women of the Church,
Albemarle Presbytery, will
be held at the First
Presbyterian Church in
Wilson, April 20 and 21. The
theme of the meeting is
‘‘Moving Toward
Wholeness.” Mrs. S.D.
Fuller of Rocky Mount,
president, will preside at all
sessions.
Council members will
meet April 20 at 3 P.M. with
general registration
beginning at 5:30, followed
by a Fellowship Dinner at 6
P.M.
Hie evening service will
begin at 7:30 o’clock. Rev.
Charles William Coates
from the Englewood
Presbyterian Church in
Rocky Niount,- will deliver
the tnessage.
Registration on April 21,
will begin at 9:30 A.M. with
the call to order at 10. Rev.
Joseph Cochran, general
secretary of Albemarle
Presbytery in Greenville,
will give the invocation and
bring greetings.
Dr. Thomas K. Farmer,
Pastor of the First Church,
Rocky Mount, will deliver
the morning message. Mrs.
Walter C. Newton of
Durham, will install the new
officers.
Rev. Lawrence Avent,
pastor of the First Church,
Wilson, will administer the
Sacrament of the Lord’s
Supper and pronouce the
Benediction and Blessing. A
luncheon will follow in the
gymnasium.
A cordial welcome to
attend is extended to the
churches of Albemarle
Presbytery.

Square Dance
Club Opens
In Edenton
The Colonial Squares, a
square dance club for
Chowan County, has been
organized and is underway,
reported Lynn C. Perry,
club president. Dances are
scheduled each second and
fourth Friday at the D.F.
Walker School, and classes
for the club are slated to
begin in September.
Oho* club officers include
Tommy Basnight, vice
president, Hawk Cnimmey,
secretary, and Sid White,
Jr., treasurer.
“Square dancing is good
family entertainment and is
popular among children
teenagers. It is one of the
few activities that a family
can enjoy together,” Perry
stated. “Dances are usually
held from 8 until 11 P.M. and
no alcoholic beverages are
allowed before or during a
dance.”
Those interested in
learning to square dance
may contact any club officer
for more information.
Western Square dancing
is a Mend of dance forms
that emerged as various
cultures intermingled in
early America.
In keeping with the
traditions of square dan
cing, ladies wear full skirts
with bouffant crinolins and
men wear western pants,
shirts, and boots. The music
is usually recorded and the
calls are made to hoe-downs
as well as popular tunes.
Square dancing is con
sidered America’s largest
participation sport. There
are clubs throughout the
U.S. as well as in foreign
countries.
Baptists Set
Youth Week
April 17-23
Youth Week will be ob
served April 17-23 at
Edenton Baptist Church. All
positions of the church will
be filled by the young
people, ages 12-17, during
the week. >
Ah the 11 o’clock morning *
service on Sunday, Joel
Hylton will bring the
morning message. Special
music will be provided by
the Youth Choir under the
direction of Karen Gray.
Terry White will be at the
organ with Anna Kay
Manning as pianist.
Robin Harrell will serve
as Minister of Education-
Youth for the week. All
Sunday School classes will
be taught by the young
people, as well as serving as
deacons and ushers.
At the 7:30 evening
worship, a dramatic play
entitled “Sobbing Stone”
will be presented.

Karen Gray, Maurice
Bunch, Allen Bunch, and
Rhonda Kirby and Assisting
with lighting and sound will
be John Norris and Chuck
Cozart. Lynn Overton will
serve as pianist.
