St. David’s is located just west of Creswell, about one half mile off U. S. 64, marked by an historical marker. St. David’s is one of the truly historical and unique churches of North Carolina. It remains in much the same condition as it was \yhen completed. This year marks the 175th anniversary of the beginning of its con struction. In 1789 Rev. Charles Pettigrew moved for the first time to Tyrrell County. He remained for three years, moved to other ad jacent counties and re turned permanently in 1797. Charles Pettigrew was a teacher, farmer, businessman, clergyman, and the first person to be elected Episcopal Bishop of North Carolina. Bishop William White the second American to be consecrated a bishop, was deeply concerned for the disorganization of the Episcopal Church in the southern states of the union. Through Governor Samuel Johnson of North Carolina, Bishop White gained the assistance of Mr. Pettigrew in contacting the clergy in this area. Following a drawn out and not en thusiastically supported series of meetings and correspondence, persons met in Tarboro in May of 1794 to organize the Diocese of North Carolina. At that meeting delegates to the General Convention of 1795 were elected and Parson Pettigrew was elected Bishop. Because of his concern about an irregularity in the cer tificate of his election and because of poor health and because the General Con vention of 1798 has to be postponed due to yellow fever in Philadelphia the consecration of Parson Pettigrew never took place. Charles Pettigrew was “Minister and Rector of St. Paul’s Church Edenton” from 1775 for “many years” even though the majority of this time he lived in Tyrrell County. He was moved by the lack of religious life among neighbors. Because they were poor and he did not wish to ask their assistance he built two chapels for them in 1803. One of these was built on his own land close to his residence and begun the ■ I COMMSBCIAia. Iq I to Have Forever with a jm I Album# [Photography by Allan 8 ALLAN B. I begin to hope that... my feeble Labours may be useful amongst this people”. When CHrles Pettigrew died in 1887 he left the Episcopalians and their heirs White Chapel, now known as St. David’s Church. The Episcopalians of the Creswell -area use St. David’s on special occasions and maintain it. The service of May 15 is scheduled for the afternoon in the hopes that many will wish to come and be introduced to this lovely heritage. The members of Christ Church will serve lunch beginning at 1:30 on the grounds, (ham, fried chicken, bar beque—all you can eat). This will be a truly country church groaning board. Advance reser vations. will be required. Tickets will be $3.50 a piece and proceeds will be used for needed repair work at St. David’s. Tickets may be purchased by writing Mrs. Ray Spruill, Creswell, 27928 or the Coalition Office P. 0. Box 748 Edenton, 27932. (102 E. Queen Street).
