Thunday May tt, 1977 Grain Prices Reported Jjto wer Through Thursday S Grain prices were lower Thursday of this . compared to the same * ' period of die previous week, according to the Market News Service, North Carolina Department of Agriculture. No. 2 yellow shelled corn was 3-5 cents lower per bushel and ranged mostly 2.40-2.48 in the eastern part of the state and 2.54-2.86 in the piedmont. No. 1 yellow soybeans were .28 to .65 cents lower and ranged mostly $9.04-9.59. New crop corn for harvest delivery was 2.18-2.27; New crop soybeans harvest delivery 6.76-7.00; new crop wheat June-July delivery 2.06-2.18. Sweet potato prices moved higher this week. Fifty pound cartons of U. S. No. 1 Jewels were quoted at SIO.OO to 11.00 on Thursday. This report will be the last ' one issued for the 1976 crop, v Some shippers will be packing sweet potatoes for the next few weeks. Egg prices were 1 cent Helping People Get Better Food Very Gratifying The spirit of helping is one that inspires many people. And helping an im poverished family get and ÜBe better food can be a gratifying experience for volunteers, according to Chowan County Social Service director, Ronald M. Huffman. The food stamp outreach program being conducted in f ' (Jiowan County is trying to reach people who need food assistance but who don’t know about or don’t un derstand the program. And volunteers from throughout the county can serve both needy individuals and their communities by donating some time to Chowan Coynty’s Social Services Department.' Outreach is not something that can be accomplished by the Department of Social Services alone. This is also a community project and a community responsibility. The outreach effort requires a lot of hands to help distribute materials, provide transportation to people in rural areas, canvassing low income neighborhoods, assist - clients to shop and provide basic nutrition to clients. The North Carolina weighted average price for small lot sales of consumer grade eggs in cartons delivered to nearby retail outlets was quoted at 59.70 cents per dozen for A Large whites; 49.86 on mediums, and 40.80 cents for smalls. Broilers closed the week lower. Supplies are adequate with the demand moderate. The North Carolina FOB dock weighted average price is 40.43 cents per pound for the week of May 16 for less than trucklots picked up at processing plants. The average live weights for the state on May Uth was 3.96 pounds per bird. A total of 6,335,000 head were slaughtered in the state this week. On the North Carolina live hen market this week, prices were steady on heavy type hens. Supplies were fully adequate with the demand slow. Heavy type at the farm were reported at 15- >4-17 cents per pound. Cotton quotations on the Charlotte market ranged 72.50-73.00 for strict low middling 1-one sixteenth inch from Monday- Thursday of this week. A total of 11,179 feeder pigs were sold on nine state graded sales this week. Prices were 2.00-5.60 higher per cwt on 40-70 pound pigs compared to the previous week. No. 1 and 2 grade pigs weighing 46 pounds averaged $89.35 per cwt., No. 3, 44 pound pigs 82.21; No. 1 and 2,55 pounds $83.91, No. 3s, 55 pounds $76.32; No. 1 and 2s, 65 pounds $79.15, No. 3s, 65 pounds $71.09; No. 1 and 2s, 75 pounds $72.72, No. 3s, 75 pounds $63.64 per cwt. At weekly cattle auctions held about the state this week slaughter cows were steady to 50 cents lowa*, veal calves irregular and feeder calves .25-2.00 lower. Utility and commercial slaughter cows brought 24.00-30.00 choice veal calves 49.00-56.00 with good 39.00- 50.00; Choice slaughter steers at one market 38.50- 41.25 and good 36.00-38.50; choice slaughter heifers 34.00-35.25; good feeder steers 300-600 pounds 36.00- 44.50 good feeder heifer 300- 500 pounds 29.25-35.25 per cwt and baby calves 12.00- 45.00 per head. North Carolina hog prices at daily buying stations this week were higher ranging mostly 38.50-44.00.
